Description
H. 0. KEMPTON.
1 HOLDER FOR SAFETY RAZOR BLADES.
APPLICATION FILED NOV- 29, 19]!!- Patented June 21, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOLDER FOR SAFETY-RAZOR BLADES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1921.
Application filed November 29, 1919. Serial No. 341,411.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON D. KEMP- TON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Safety-Razor Blades, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a holder for safety razor blades whereby a blade may be readily positioned and clamped between two arms and held in the handle while the blade is being stropped; and the object of this invention is to provide such a blade holder which is very simple and extremely inexpensive in construction and practical in its operation, the clamping member being so arranged as to be readily inserted in a handle whereby the device may be conveniently manipulated for stropping a blade.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1is a perspective view illustrating my improved stropping device.
Fig. 2is a perspective view of the clamping member removed from the handle and the guide roll removed from this member.
Fig. 3-.is a perspective view of the handle with the clamping member removed.
Fig. 4is a sectional end elevation on line 4-4; of Fi 1.
Fig. 5-1s a longitudinal section through the clamping member and handle on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6--is a. View of the blade in the clamping member, one of the arms of said member being removed.
Referring to the drawing, 10 designates the handle member of the holderwhich is preferably constructed from sheet stock, the edges 11 of which are turned 'or folded over upon the body portion thereof providing a socket 12 for the purpose presently described.
A blade-gripping member is formed preferably of a strip of sheet stock folded endwise 13 upon itself comprising two opposing gripping arms 14 and 15 normally set slightly apart providing a space between them to receive the edge of the blade '16. The end portions 17 and 18 of these arms are brought closer together one of which is preferably longer than the other to facilitate their entrance into the socket portion 12 of the handle. The arm 15 is provided with a backing plate member 19 preferably formed integral with one edge thereof and bent over at a right angle to close the opening between the arms at their upper edge and the ends 20 of the plate are turned upward andpierced at 21 to pivotally mount a roller member 22 between them.
The free edge 23 of this back plate is preferably provided with a tongue or projecting member 24 which is adapted to, extend through a corresponding slot or openin 25 in the opposite arm 14. whereby when t ese arms are brought together the back plate is securely locked in operating position.
The roll member 22 is preferably formed in a plurality of independent sections all mounted on a single pintle whereby the drawing of the razor in a circular sweep across thestropper the speed of the different collar members will vary and by being formed independently of each other each may turn its required speed independently of the other.
It will be noted that offsetting or inwardly setting the end members 17 and 18 shoulders are provided at 26 forming end walls for engaging and firml securing the thickened back portion 27 o the blade.
By forming one of the arm ends longer than the other the entering of these arms into the socket portion 12 of the handle is greatly facilitated.
My improved blade holder is extremel simple and inexpensive in construction an practical in its operation.
The. solely toward the construction illustrated, but I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the privileges of the mechanical changes to which the device is susce tible, the invention being defined and hmited by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A safety razor blade holder comprising a handle having a recess therein, a strip of metal folded upon itself forming separable side arms adapted to grip and bind a blade between them, said strip having free end portions adapted to be inserted and removably held in said handle recess, a backing plate for the blade integral with one edge of one arm and having upturned ends, and a blade guide-roll j ournaled in said ends.
2. A safety razor blade holder comprisforegoing description is directeding a handle, a strip of metal folded upon itself forming separable side arms adapted to grip and hold a blade between them, said strip having free ends adapted to be locked together and removably held in a recess in said handle, a backing plate for the blade integral with one edge of one arm, the free edge of said plate being provided with means for engaging the opposite arm when in operative position, bearing members on said 10 plate, and a blade guide roll journaled in said members.
In testimony whereof I afiix m signature.
HARRISON D. KE PTON.
