This invention relatesA to blade holders and more particularly to a holder adapted to grip a safety razor blade when stropping the same.
One object of the invention is to so form the holder that a blade may `be firmly gripped between companion strips with the portion of the bladehaving a cutting edge extending transverselyv froml the holder.
Another object ofthe invention is to pre vent the holder forming strips from having movement transversely of each other when assembled.
Another object of the invention is to so unite the strips that they will be firmly held in engagement with eachother but ma be readily separated aftery a blade has een stropped.

The blade holder is formed of companion strips l and 2 which are referably metal but may be molded or out roml other materials if so desired. These strips are r1 1d so that they do not bend an apprecie4 le amount `when the blade held is being stropped but should beof sufficient strength to prevent them from Vbeing broken during the stropping action. The strip 1 Vwhich rests upon the strip 2 is of such width that, when ,in place, it extends from the` inner face of the side flange 3 to the` free side edge ofthe strip 2 and of such thickness that its upper face will be flush with the upper face o the flange, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. A recess 4 is formed in the forward end of the strip 1 intermediate its width, and this recess is adapted to receive a lug or? arm 5 carried b the forward end of the strip 2 and rovided at its `upper end with a lip 6 whic extends in overhanging rela;
tion to the body portion of the strip 2, as"
shown in Fig. 5, and is adapted for overlying engagement with the forward end of the strip 1, as shown 4in Figs. 1 and 2. It will, therefore, be seen that this arm or lug together with its lip 5 will serve tosecurely retain the forward end portion of the strip 1 in operative engagement with the strip 2. Slots 7 and 8 extend `longitudinally of the forward end portions ofthe'two strips and register, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so that, when a blade 9 of the type used in a Gern safety razor is to be stropped, the head portion 10 of. the lblade may extend into the slots; Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, it will be seen that the head portion of the blade is snugly received in the two slots and, therefore, the blade will be firmly held against movement longitudinally or transversely of the holder and there will be no danger of its slipping out of the pro er position with respect tol the holder w ile being stropped. Pins 11, 12 and 13 project upwardly from the strip or jaw 2 in spaced relation to each other longitudinallyA of the strip and are received in openings 15, 16 and 17 formed Y in the strip or jaw 1. These pins serve not only as Vmeans for assisting in preventing the strips from having longitudinal or 'transverse movement relative to each other, but
also serve to engage other types of razor blades and prevent them from` having sliding or twisting movement between the stri is while being stropped. If a blade of t e Gilletteor Durham type is to be stropped,
it will be disposed between the strips with f the pins 11 andf12 passin through the openings of the Gillette bla e or longitudinally extending slot of theDurham Duplex blade. These blades have not been illustrated as they are'of a well-known construction. It will be obvious that blades other than those specifically mentioned may also be gripped between the strips and engage either with a propriate pins or have portions fitted into t e slots 7 and 8 of the strips. The rear end portions of the two strips oi" jaws should be firmly held in engagement with each other while a blade is ripped between their forward portions an therefore, there has been provided a latch 18 which is U-shaped in cross section, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and has its upper arm formed with a rearwardly extending ear 19 through which extends a pivot pin 20. The pivot pin 20 is the form of a rivet which passes through alined openings formed in the ear and strip 1, as shown in Fig. 2, and has heads formedat its upper and lower ends, the lower head being countersunk so that it is flush with the under face of the strip l. It will be readily seen that after the forward end of the strip 1 has been `engaged with the arm 5 and swung downwardly into engagement with the strip 2for clamping a blade disposed between the strips the latch 18 may be swung to the position shown in Fig. 1 and its arms will grip the two strips and securely hold them 1n engagement with each other. The holder may then be held in one hand with the forward end portion extending from the hand and the blade stro ped in the usual manner. It will also be o vious that if desired a safety razor blade may be secured between the strips, as shown in Fig. 1, and the device used as a ripping knife.
In Fi 7, there has been illustrated a blade holder havinga, slightly modified construction. Referring to this figure, it will be seen that the strip 2 instead of being bent to form` a flange 3 may have its corres onding side portion rolled to form a tu ular sleeve 21 which extends above and below the plane of the strip and serves not only as an abutment to'engage the strip 1 but also as a heel upon which the blade holder may be turned when stropping the blade.
In Figs. 8 to 12, there has been illustrated another modified form of the invention. Referring to these figures, it will be seen that the stri or section 2 instead of being bent upwardly to form an abutment flange 3 is first bent downwardly, as shown at 22, and then bent upwardly back upon itself with a portion 23 projecting above its upper face and constituting an abutment flange corresponding to the flange 3. The strip 2 in this form of the invention will, therefore, be provided at one side with a head having a depending portion 22 adapted to rest upon a strop and retain a blade gripped between the strips in proper angular relation to the strop and an upper portion 23 forming an abutment flange corresponding to the flange 3 and adapted to be engaged by the strip or section 1. The sec-tion 1 is of greater width than the section shown in- Figs. 1 and 6 and has one side portion bent to form a flange 24` of a height corresponding to the flange 23 and adapted to engage the inner face thereof, as shown in Figs. 11 and l2. The strips l and 2 in this form of the invention are provided with openings or slots 7 and 8 corresponding to the openings 7 and 8 of the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and the strip 1 is also formed with openings corresponding to the openings 15, 16 and 17 and indicated b the same reference numeral. Instead o employing rivets 11,12 and 13 to pass through openings or recesses formed in razor blades and fit into the openings 15, 16 and 17, the strip 2 in this form has been stamped to rovide lugs 25, 26 and 27. These lugs ta re the place of the studs 11, 12 and 13 but are formed integral with the strip instead of separate therefrom. The arm 28 carried by thc stri 2 corresponds to the arm 5 and is providedp with a bill or lip extension 29 but instead of being disposed intermediate the width of the strip is located adjacent the opposite side thereof from the flange 23and 1s received in a recess 30 corresponding to the notch or recess 4 in the strip 1. By having the arm or hook 28 dis` posed at one sideof the strip 2 instead of intermediate its width the strip 1 may be very easily placed in engagement with the strip 2. At their opposite ends the two strips are releasably secured to each other by. a fastener corresponding to the clip 18 and pivotally mounted through the medium of a rivet 20,50 that it may be swung into and out .V
of gripping engagement with the two strips. The portions of the strips straddled Vby the fastener when in a gripping position are formed with recesses 31 and 32 so that the fastener does not project from theedges of the strips and will not be liable to be accidental'ly moved to a releasing position. Since the fastener fits into the recesses, it may cooperate with the studs to prevent the two strips from having movement longi tudinall of each other. The upper edges of the anges 23 andv 24 may be rounded so that the blade holder may be readily turned upon `a strop or ifv desired the strip from which the section 2 is formed may be of greater width and after being bent to form the upwardly projecting ortion of its head have the upper portion t ereof folded back u on itself and provide a rounded upper e ge for the flange 23. It should also bc noted that if desired a fastener 18 could be provided for the forward end portion of the holder in which case the hook or clip 28 and `recess 30 could be dispensed with.
Having thus described the invention, I claim: y
1. A blade holder com' rising companion 'aws each formed as an ongated strlp, one eing provided with asideflange overla ping the adjacent side ed e of the other strip in abutting engagement t erewith, a. fastener carried b one strip adjacent one endthereof and a apted to engage the other strip and prevent movement thereof away from the first strip, said strips being formed vfor interlocking engagement with a blade disposed therebetween with a sharpened edge portion of the blade extending from the strips at the opposite side from said flange, and a U- shaped clip pivotally carried by one of Said strips adjacent the other end thereof from said lug and adapted to be swung into straddling engagement with the strips.
2. A blade holder comprising companion jaws having flat face to face contact and each formed as an elongated strip, one being provided with aside flange overlapping the side edge of the other strip, a lug extending from one strip adjacent one end thereof and having a portion to extend in overlapping relation to theother strip and prevent movement thereof away from the first strip, said strips being formed fior interlocking engagement with a blade disposed therebetween with a portion extending from the strips at the opposite side from said flange,
' and a U-shaped fastener adapted for straddling engagement with said strips adjacent the op osite ends thereof from said lug and formed) with a side arm pivoted to one strip to mount the fastener for swinging into and out of gripping engagement with the strips.
3. A blade holder comprising elongated strips adapted to be disposed one upon the other and engage opposite faces of a blade placed between the strips with the strips in interlocking engagement with the blade, one strip having a side portion bent downwardly and then upwardly to form a head having a portion projected upwardly and constituting an abutment flange, the other strip having a side portion bent upwardly to form .a flange ada ted to enga e the abutment flange of the Erst strip, an means to releasably secure the strips one upon the other with portions thereof in gripping engagement' with a blade disposed between them.
4. A blade holder comprising elongated strips adapted to be disposed one upon the other and engage opposite faces of a blade placed between the strips with the strips in interlocking engagement with the blade, one strip having a side portion bent downwardly and then upwardly to form a head having a portion projected upwardly andconstitutm an abutment, the other strip being adapte to rest upon the upper face of the first strip with a side portion engaging the abutment thereof, and means to releasably secure the strips with a blade firmly gripped between them.
5. `A blade holder comprising elongated strips adapted to be disposed one upon the other and engage oppos1te faces of a blade placed between the strips with the strips in interlocking engagement with the blade, one strip having a side portion bent downwardly and then upwardly to forma head havin a portion projected upwardly and constituting an abutment flange, the other strip being adapted to rest upon the upper face of the first strip with a side portion engaging the abutment flange thereof, and a cl1 adapted to straddle said strips and releasa ly secure them in engagement with each other, the free side lportions of the strips being formed with registering recesses to receive the clips.
