relation thereto. The blade 13 is adapted to This invention relates to the type of scraping and cutting'tools comprising generally a handlecarryingmembers between which a blade is removably clamped. j Its chief object is the provision of a simple tool or holder'of this character which'permits the ready application and removal of the blade and which can be cheaply manufactured.
Anotherlobjectis to so constructthe-tool that one of its blade-clamping members may perform the additional function of a guar when the device is not in use. V
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bladeholder, showingthe same adjusted to expose the edge of the blade. Figure 2is asimilar View with the parts in position to apply or remove ablade. Figure 8 is a perspective view of the clamping platen Figure 4 is a similar view of'a type of blade which may be clamped in the holder. Figures 5 and 6 are transverse sections of the head of the holder, showing different adjustments of the clamping plate.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The tool comprises a handle 10 terminating at its front end in a fiat cross head 11, and a clamping plate 12 imposed on the cross head and having the same general dimensions as the head. Between these members a suitable scraping or cutting blade 13 is held. Old or new razor blades may be used for this purpose, the blade shown in the drawings being of the Well-known double-edge type with three holes.
The head 11 has a central opening 1 1 adapted to register with the corresponding hole of the blade and a pairof lugs or stops 15 located on the face of the head on opposite sides of said opening through the end holes of the blade to hold it against backward and endwise movement on the handle-head. These lugs are preferably struck up from the headand arranged to face forwardly, as shown, with their free end portions disposed substantially horizonta]. or parallel to the cross head in spaced and adapted to passv the lugs 15 overlying the blade.
11, andon opposite sides of the stud said plate has transverse slots or apertures 18,
adapted to receive the lugs 15, to hold the plate froinlateral and backward displacement on the handle-head. These slots extend beyond'the'front and rear edges of the central stud 16 and are of a length substantially twicethat of the lugs 15.
' J A lever 19 fulcrumed on the handle 10 and engaging the plate 12 serves to "clamp the blade securely between these parts and to keep their retaining members interlocked. In the preferred construction shown, this lever is pivoted between its ends to the handle by a pin20 located adjacent to and centrally of the plate 12, the short upper arm of the lever being offset and normally'over lapping said plate, while its long lower arm overlies and bears against the face of the handle. To apply a blade to the holder, the clamping lever is swung crosswise ofthe'handle, as shownin Figure 2, and the clamping plate 12 is removed from the head 11. A blade is then engaged with the lugs 15, the clamping-plate is replaced to interlock its stud '16'with the blade and the slots 18'with said lugs andthe lever isturned parallel with the handle, thus locking the clamping plate one of its longitudinal edges than the other,
as shownin Figure 3. 'By thisarra-ngement, upon bringing the edge of the plate nearest the slots opposite the front edge of the handle-head, the cutting edge of the blade is uncovered for service, as shown in Figures 1 and 5, with the free edges of the lugs 15 abutting against one end of the slots 18 in the clamping plate 12, While upon reversing the plate from this position, its other edge extends beyond the cutting edge of the blade and covers it as shown in Figure 6 with the freeedges' of said lugs 15 abutting against the opposite ends ofsaid slots, thereby protecting the hands when the tool is not in use. In either position of the clamping plate its stud 16 engages the opening 14in the cross head 11 and one end or the other of the slots 18 abut against the lugs 15, thus positively holding the clamping plate against accidental displacement. V
This improved tool or holder is especially serviceable as a scraper, for example, for removingpaper from walls or paint from various surfaces, but it is also useful as a V cutter.
a a blade-clamping plate imposed on said head and having a stud arranged to engage an opening of the blade and the opening of said head, and apertures to receive said lugs, the latter constituting stops for alining the blade on the cross head to bring its opening into register with the cross head opening, and a clamping lever fulcrumed between its ends on said handle and overlapping said clamping-plate.
2 A blade holder of the character described, comprising a pair of superposed blade-clamping members and means for clamping them together, one of said members having a stop-lug and the other being reversible and having a transverse slot engaging said lug and of a length substantially twice that of the engaging portion of the lug, said slot being arranged nearer one longitudinal edge of said slot-ted member than the other, to uncover the cutting edge of the clamped blade in one position of the reversible member and cover said edge in the other position of the member, one end of the slot engaging the lug in one position of theparts and the other end of said slot engaging its lug in the other position of the parts.
8. A blade holder of the character described, comprising a handle having a cross head, said head being provided centrally with an opening and on opposite sides of said opening with blade-engaging lugs, said lugs facing forwardly with their free end portions in spaced parallel relation to the cross head, a blade-clamping plate imposed on said head and having a stud arranged to engage an opening of the blade and the opening of said head and also having transverse slots to receive said lugs, said clamping-plate being reversible on said cross head and its slots being located nearer'one longitudinal edge a plurality of alining openings therein, said" cross head having an opening therein and forwardly-facing blade-engaging lugs struck from its top side and having their free end portions disposed in spacedparallel relation to the cross head, such. spa cebeing sufficient to receive the contiguous portions of the blade beneath said lugs, the clamping platehaving a stud projecting from its bottom side for engagement with one of the blade-openings andsaid crosshead opening and also having transversely-elongated openings for receiving the cross head lugs and against one end of which said lugs are adapted to abut, and means mounted on the handled member for clamping the other member thereto.
