Description

F. OLIVER.
BATH TUB.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.23, 1909.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK OLIVER, OF CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA.
BATH-TUB.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK Onlvnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented a. new and useful Bath-Tub, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bath tubs.
The object of the invention is in a simple and thoroughly practical manner to prevent the water in a bath tub from splashing over the edges thereof, and further to render the tub thoroughly sanitary by preventing lodgment of soapsuds and the like at the rim thereof.
With the above and other objects in view as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel arrangen'ient of a water deflecting addition to a bath tub as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts,Figure 1 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through a bath tub showing the same equipped with the improvements of the present invention. Fig.
i 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Figs. 8, 4-, 5 and (S are sectional detail views of slightly modified forms of invention.
teferring to the drawings and to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, 1 designates an ordinary en amel bath tub, and 2 the rim thereof. The rim is curled inwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, to form. a water deflecting head 3, and thence outward. As the bead merges into the body of the tub on its inner side, there will be no space in which soap suds, scum or the like can lodge and which would render the bath tub unsanitary as it could not be conveniently removed or might be neglected.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 3, the rim at is in the form of a tube, the inner portion of which constitutes the water-deflecting bead and the outer wall thereof the rim.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the rim 5 is tubular in form and is triangular in cross section, the inner wall Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 23, 1909.

Serial No. 473,903.
forming a water deflecting bead and the outer wall the rim.
1n the form of the invention shown in Fig. 5, the water deflecting head (3 is separate and distinct from the rim 7, is semicircular in cross section and is disposed adjacent to the upper edge of the tub.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. (3, the water deflecting head 8 forms a continuation of the rim 9; is hollow and approximately triangular in cross-section, and its under face is disposed at an inward converging angle to the walls of the tub.
A feature common to each form of the invention is that the water deflecting bead merges into the body of the tub and is connected or forms an integral part of the inner wall thereof, whereby there will be no channel or space left in which matter might accumulate such as would result with devices of this character heretofore in use.
The improvements are simple in character and may readily be added to a bath tub without materially increasing its cost of production.
lVhat is claimed is l. A bath tub having, at the upper edges of its side walls, a water deflecting bead of such cross sectional contour as to be bounded by an imaginary circle, with which the bead contacts at a plurality of points, the center of said circle lying immediately iiiwardly of the plane of the respective side walls of the tub, whereby the major portion of the head will be located imvardly of such plane, the wateraletlecting surface of such bead being of a contour other than concave.
2. A bath tub having an exterior outward and downward curled rim, forming a continuation of the walls of the tub, and an interior waterdeflecting bead, approximately triangular in cross-section, the under face of which is disposed at an inward converging angle to the walls of the tub.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto allixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
