MARY A. HAINES, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
MASSAGE APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters IPatent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Application filed March 3, 1909. Serial No. 481,075.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY A. HAINES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Massage A paratus, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention re ates to. a massage apparatus of that class known as the dry applicator-or vacuum type, and the object 0 the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character which is extremely simple in construction, comparatively cheap to manufacture and which will perform the functions for which it is intended with efficiency and with certainty.
Withthe above and other objects in view -which will appear as the description prov treatment so that the skin of the patient will be thoroughly dried and a perfect circulation of the blood in the parts operated upon insured. The device is also adapted for re moving wrinkles and filling out hollow places and may thus be used as an entirely separate device from the wet or steaming massage, if desired.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the cylinder constructed of some suitable metal and provided with a longitudinally extending handle 2. This handle 2 may be integrally formed with the cylinder 1 or connected therewith in any desired manner and the handle comprises a pair of spaced arms each having a central upturned portion 3 provided with suitable alining openings for a ur ose'hereinafter to be described. The cylin er 1 has its upper face opened and provided with suitable threads adapted for the reception of similar threads provided upon the offset portion of a removable closure 1. The bottom ortion of the cylinder 1 has either integra 1y formed thereon or securely attached thereto a on" member 5. This member 5 has its lower e ge provided with a rounded bead and a concaved lower wall as designated by the numeral The concaved wall 6 is rovided with a central opening 7, communicating with the interior of the cylinder 1.
Positioned within the cylinder 1 is a iston 8 provided with a stem 9 exten 11'1" through an elongated opening 10 provided in the top of the closure 4. The outwardly extending portion of the stem 9 is provided with a suitable opening which is adapted to aline with similar openings provided within the ends of the up er,handle member 11. The handle 11 is su stantially of a similar construction to that of the handle 2, being provided with suitable side arms having central depending ears 12 adapted to be ositioned over the ears 3 of the arm 2 and aving suitable openings alining with the openings of the extension 3, which are adapted for the reception of a suitablepintle 13. In order to normally force the arms 2 and 11 away from each other, and thus normally retain the piston 8 adjacent the top of the vacuum cup 5 I have provided a suitable spring 14, which is. preferably bent at its center so as to provide a suitable eye 15 which is adapted to be engaged by the pintle 13, thus positioning the arms of the spring member 14 between the side arms of the han- Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
In a massage apparatus, a cylinder, an inte rally formed substantially cross sectional y U-shaped handle for the cylinder, 11 removable closure for the cylinder, a vacuum cup having a central opening for the cylinder, a piston, a rod for the piston projecting through the closure of the cylinder, a handle tween the U-shapenl handles and exert opposubstantially U-shapeol in cross section piv- I site pressnre. v 10 otally connected with the rod of the piston, In testimony whereof I aflix my signature a pivot connecting the two handles, and a l in presence of two Witnesses.
