CLOTHESPIN.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES- W. Bowers,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Pearlington, in the county of Hancock and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Clothespin, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to clothes pin construction, the primary object of the invention being to provide a wooden clothes pin having novel means for preventing breaking of the clothes pin when the same is being positioned to secure articles to a clothes line.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for adding resiliency to the leg members of a clothes pin to insure the clothes pin gripping the articles to be sup ported on a clothes line.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the of the drawings includes a body portion indicated 0 by the reference character 5 which is formed preferably of wood, and constructed to provide leg members 6 that grip the article to be secured on a clothes line in the usual and well known manner.
Positioned on the body portion at a point adjacent to the inner ends of the leg members 6 is a sleeve 7 formed of suitable metal and secured in position by means of a trans- I versely extending pin 8, whereby resiliency will be added to the leg members 6 by restricting movement of the leg members away from each other.
As shown by Figure 3 of the drawing, the clothes pin includes sections 9 which when connected provide leg members 10, the sections being held in close engagement with each other by means of the wire 11 which is coiled around the sections, the ends of the wire passing through openings in the sections where they are bent downwardly as at 12 to closely engage the sections and hold them against displacement.
The clothes pin shown by Figure 5 includes sections 13 held together by means of a transversely extending rivet 14 and a relatively short pin 15 disposed in suitable openings formed in the sections 13 to insure against twisting of one section with respect to the other section.
The side surfaces of the clothes pin as shown in this figure are formed with grooves 16 presenting roughened surfaces, whereby the pin may be readily grasped by the person using the pin to facilitate the positioning of the pin.
Figure 7 illustrates a further form of the clothes pin, the body portion thereof being indicated at 17 which body portion embodies sections connected by pin 18 at their upper 1 ends, the lower ends of the sections constituting the legs of the clothes pin, being connected by means of the split ring 19 which has its ends disposed in openings formed in the outer surfaces of the sections as shown by Figure 8.
In the modified form of the invention as illustrated by Figure 9, the sections 20 of the clothes pin are formed with grooves 21 adjacent to the upper outer edges thereof and formed with openings 22 adjacent to the free ends of the sections.
The ring member 23 performs a two-fold function by its contact with the walls of the grooves 21, the sections of the clothes pin being held against twisting with respect to each other, while the lower ends of the ring member which are bent at right angles as shown at 24, are positioned in openings formed in the sections to hold the sections normally in close engagement with each other. The ring member also guards the space between the sections of the clothes pin to lock the clothes pin on a supporting line.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that clothes pins constructed in accordance with the invention not only embody structures that are exceptionally strong and durable, but structures wherein the gripping leg members of the clothes pin will be normally urged towards each other to grip the article being secured.
I claim 1. In a clothes pin, a body portion including spaced leg members, said body portion having grooves formed adjacent to one end thereof, said leg members having openings formed in their outer surfaces and disposed adjacent to the free ends thereof, and a split ring member having its .ends disposed within the openings, portions of the ring member being disposed in the grooves to normally urge the leg members towards each other.

In a clothes pin, a body portion including spaced leg members, a split ring member, said 'body portion having grooves and openings, said split ring member being positioned in the grooves and opening to removably secure the ring member to the body portion, and a portion of the ring member adapted to extend beyond one end of the body portion.
