To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH MELNICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Button Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap, strong and durable button hook.
The invention consists in a button hook made of a single piece of wire in the manner hereinafter described in the specification and particularly as set 'forth in the claims.
Referring ,to the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved button hook. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking toward the left in said figure. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form of my improved button hook.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, referring particularly to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the button hook is formed of a single piece of wire bent intermediate of its ends to form a loop 5, which is suitably shaped to be inserted in a button-hole and to engage the button of the boot. One portion 6 of said wire extends from the button engaging loop 5 to form a shank portion 7 of the handle. The other portion 8 of said wire extends from the button engaging loop 5 adjacent to the portion 6 and is then bent to form a loop 9. Thence returning along the shank portion of the handle, said wire is bent in helical form as at 10, 11, and finally is bent around the two portions 6 and 8 to form a guard 12.
The advantages embodied in my button hook consists in its extreme simplicity and strength, formed as it is of a single piece of wire, the loop 5 performing the usual functions of the button engaging loop of the button hook, while the loop 9 serves to form a portion of the handle, so that the same may be grasped firmly while the button hook is being used for buttoning the boot, and said loop 9 further may be used as a means for hanging up the button hook or for attaching the same to a key ring.
The guard 12 prevents the button engaging loop from being pushed through the button-hole to a greater extent than is desirable, and also forms a smooth termination for the helical portion 11 of the wire surrounding the portions 6 and 8 of the shank of the handle.
In the modified form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 3, it will be seen that the button hook is formed of a single piece of Wire, bent intermediate of its ends to form a loop 5, which is suitably shaped to be inserted in a button-hole and to engage the button of the boot. One portion 6 of said wire extends from the button engaging loop 5 and is bent in helical form to form a shank portion 7 of the handle. The other portion 8 of said wire extends from the button engaging loop 5, adjacent to the portion 6, and is bent in helical form to form a portion of the shank 7 of the handle and is then bent to form a loop 9. Thence returning along the shank portion of the handle, said wire is bent in helical form, as at 10", 10 and finally is bent around the two portions 6 and S to form a guard 12. It will thus be seen that the shank portion 7 of the handle is formed by the portions 6, 8 and 10, all wound in helical form adjacent to and around each other, thus forming a very strong and durable handle and one which can be firmly grasped by the user.
The particular formation of the loops 9 and 9 in the two forms of my button hook hereinbeit'ore described enable the user to get a firm grip upon the handle to prevent the same from twisting while buttoning the boot.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. As an article of manufacture, a button hook formed of a single piece of wire bent intermediate of its ends to form a loop adapted to engage a button, one portion of said wire extending from said button engaging loop to form a portion of a handle, the other portion of said wire extending from said button engaging loop adjacent to said first named handle portion, then bent to form a loop, and subsequently bent in helical form around said handle portions.
2. As an article of manufacture, a button hook formed of a single piece of wire bent intermediate of its ends to form a loop adapted to engage a button, one portion of said wire extending from said button engaging loop to form a portion of a handle, the other portion of said wire extending from said button engaging loop adjacent to said first named handle portion, then bent to form a loop, subsequently bent in helical form around said handle portions, and
finally bent therearound adjacent to said button engaging loop to form a guard.
3. As an article of manufacture, a button hook formed of a single piece of Wire bent intermediate of its ends to form a loop adapted to engage a button, one portion of said Wire bent in helical form, extending from said button engaging loop to form a portion of a handle, the other portion of said Wire bent in helical form, extending from said button engaging loop adjacent to and intertwined With said first named handle portion, then bent to form a loop and subsequently bent in helical form around said handle portions.
4:. As an article of manufacture, a button hook formed of a single piece of Wire bent intermediate of its ends to form a loop adapted to engage a button, one portion of said Wire bent in helical form, extending from said button engaging loop to form a portion of a handle, the other portion of said wire bent in helical form, extending from said button engaging loop adjacent to and intertwined With said first named handle portion, then bent to form a loop, subsequently bent in helical form around said handle portions, and finally bent therearound adjacent to said button engaging loop to form a guard.
