HOOK AND EYE. APPLICATKON FILED JULY 12,1917- Patented May 7 1918.
MABEL A. LARRIMORE, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
HOOK AND EYE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1918.
Application filed July 12, 1917. Serial No. 180,148.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MABEL A. LARRIMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to a fastener of the hook and eye type, and more particularly to the class of pronged hooks and eyes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a hook and eye structure of this character wherein both the hook and the eye can be secured to an article of wearing apparel without the necessity of sewing the same thereon and when secured will be firmly held fast thereon to withstand strains at the point of engagement of the hook with the eye.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hook and eye of this character wherein the hook is materially strengthened and can be conveniently attached to and removed from a piece of material without. the sewing of the same for the fastening of the hook to the material, the eye being also constructed for the fastening thereof without the sewing of the same to the material.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hook and eye of this character wherein damage to the material in the fastening of the hook and eye is eliminated and said hook and eye can be fastened to a piece of material irrespective of the thickness thereof or the texture of the same.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a hook and eye of this character wherein the same are formed with prongs providing staples to permit the convenient attaching of both the hook and eye to a garment with despatch.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a hook and eye of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in use, strong, durable, and inexpensive of manufacture.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hook constructed in accordance with the invention and ready for application;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the eye ready for application;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the hook shown attached to a piece of material;
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the hook shown attached;
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the eye shown attached to a piece of material.
Similar reference characters indicate cor responding parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a hook which is made from a single length of relatively stifi wire bent to form spaced outwardly bowed shank portions 5, a terminally closed bill 6, eyes 7, braces 8 and pairs of prongs 9 and 10, respectively, the braces 8 being twisted at 11 upon the shank portions 5 and also twisted together at 12 so as to close the eyes 7 and prevent the spreading of the shank portions 5 away from each other.
The prongs 10 are bent from a single length of wire which is formed with a me-. dial loop 13 trained between the shank portions 5 and the braces 8 and this wire is twisted at 14 about the braces 8 contiguous to the twists 11 thereof and the ends of the wire form the pron s 10, while the ends of the wire forming t e hook constitute the prongs 9, which prongs 9 and 10 are forced through a piece of material and are bent with the use of a suitable tool or otherwise for the secure fastening of the hook on said piece of material, thereby eliminating the sewing of the hook thereto.
The eye B is made from a single length of wire that has its central portion bent into an arched bar 15, at the ends of which loops or eyes 16 are formed, the said loops or eyes 16 being closed by the twists 17 of the wire and the terminals of this wire form prongs 18 which are adapted to be passed through a iece of material and thereafter bent for the ihstening of the eye B in place upon the piece of material, the bending of the prongs e men "being elteotecl by the use of a suitable tool or otherwise.
The hill 6 or" the hook A is cletaehebly engagecl in the usual manner with the bar 15 of the eye B when it is desired to connect the hook with the eye'in the fastening of a garment as usual.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and use of the herein clesoribecl hook zind eye will be readily apparent and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents Having thus clescribecl my invention, claim:
A hook formed from a single length of wire bent to form a terminally closed bill, outwardly bowed shank portions, eyes, braces and e pair of prongs, the braces being twisted about the shank portions and also twisted together, and a single length of wire bent to form a medial loop trained between the braces and shank portions and twisted about said braces and terminating in prongs.
In testimony whereof I efix my signature. 25
