BOTTLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and State of WVest Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottles, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide simple, reliable and eflicient means for indicating by visual evidence whether the bottle has been refilled after the original contents has been used.
Another object of the invention is to provide a visual indicator which is operated by the initial withdrawing of the stopper to indicate that the bottle has been opened for delivery of its contents, and after the cork has been originally withdrawn the indi cator cannot be operated or withdrawn or the stopper rapidly drawn and replaced without affecting the indicator.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construct-ion illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a bottle which may be of any suitable size or contour. The neck 2 of the bottle is provided at a point some distance below the mouth with a projection 3 having a hollow recess 4.- which communicates with the interior of the bottle neck. The inner wall of the neck is recessed, as at 5, in line with the recess 4. The indicator comprises a keeper consisting of a bar of metal or other suitable material having a hollow end 6 provided with an opening 7 therein. The keeper has a rear wall 8 provided with an opening 9, and depending from the lower edge of the keeper is a lip 10 which is curved to substantially conform to the cur- Specification of Letters Patent.

vature of the inner wall of the bottle. Extending from the opposite end of the keeper is a pair of spaced arms 11 having downwardly projecting feet 12. The outer ends 13 of the arms 11 are rounded to conform to the curvature of the inner wall of the bottle neck. The indicator also comprises a projector provided with an enlarged head let and a reduced shank 15. This projector is preferably formed of glass or similar material, the enlarged head 14: of which is colored to contrast with the color of the bottle neck, so that when it is projected into the recess 4: it will be readily visible through the glass forming the projection 3. The shank 15 of the projector is provided with an encircling spring 16, and the projector is inserted in the recess '7 of the keeper, the end of the shank l5 projecting through the aperture 9, and the spring 16 being compressed before the stopper has been removed from the bottle. The tension of the spring 16 is exerted to push the projector into the recess l in the bottle neck.
The stopper 17 which may be of any suitable material is provided with an operating device consisting of a strand of wire or piece of sheet metal having a shank 18 extending centrally through the stopper and provided at its outer end with a suitable loop or ring 19. Immediately under the stopper the operating element is provided with an outwardly extending arm 20, and from this point the operating element is bent downwardly to form the inclined bar 21, said inclined bar having an outwardly extending member 22 from which the vertically dis posed finger 23 extends, said finger terminating at a point in the space between the arms 11 of the indicator keeper, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1.
The indicator and the stopper in substantially the position shown in Fig. 1 are together inserted in the bottle neck with the projector retracted and held in such position by bearing against the inner wall of the bottle neck. After the stopper has been pushed down into the mouth of the bottle sufficiently, the indicator and stopper are rotated until the projector is supported immediately below the recess 1, as shown in Fig. 1. When the stopper 17 is drawn for the first time to gain access to the contents of the bottle, the inclined member 21 engages the shank 15 of the projector and lifts it sufficiently until the enlarged head 14 is projected into the recess 4, after which the inclined member 21 may be readily withdrawn from between the arms 11 of the indicator keeper.
After the contents of the bottle has been exhausted, the bottle cannot be again refilled without indicating that the original stopper has been removed, and the head 14 can be readily seen through the projection 3 in the side of the bottle neck. Moreover, the indicator cannot be withdrawn from the bottle without destruction or injury to the bottle, the indicator, or both.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my invention, while simple in construction, is reliable and efficient for its purpose and can be manufactured at slight cost.
I claim 1. A bottle provided with a projection at one side of the neck thereof, said projection being hollow, a stopper, an indicator held in an inoperative position by the stopper, said indicator comprising a keeper, a projector and a spring, and means whereby when the stopper is originally withdrawn from the bottle the projector is moved into the recess 7 in the projection to indicate that the stopper has been withdrawn for decanting the contents of the bottle. 7
2. A bottle having a neck provided with a projection, said projection having a recess communicating with the interior of the bottle neck, an indicator comprising a keeper, a spring mounted projector therein, a stop per, and means connected to the stopper for moving said projector into the recess in the projection in the bottle neck.
3. A bottle having a recess in the neck thereof, a keeper in said neck, a projector mounted in the keeper and provided with an enlarged head and a shank, a spring en circling said shank, a stopper, and means connected to the stopper for moving the projector into said recess in the bottle neck when said stopper has been withdrawn from the bottle, the enlarged head of theprojector being of a contrasting color to that of the bottle neck.
