To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, EDWIN T. BASKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at In dependence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Mop and l-Iardwood-Floor Devices; and I do declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of ref erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a combination mop and hardwood floor device and has for its object to provide a device of that class which may be used for cleaning and polishing hardwood floors and for window washing, and which is provided with means for attaching an extension handle thereto in order that the same may be used for cleaning cell ings and walls, and which is also provided with means for attaching a wet cloth in order that the device may be used as an ordinary mop.

A further object is to provide the improved details of structure which will pressently be fully described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification in which like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure I is a view in front elevation of a combination mop and hardwood floor device constructed according to my invention, the extension handle and mop cloth attaching device being applied thereto. Fig. Ill is a top plan view of the device with the exten sion handle and mop cloth attachment re moved. Fig. H1 is an end view of the mop head and handle socket. Fig. IV is an enlarged detail view of a portion of both the main and extension handles, the former being partly in section. Fig. V is a bottom plan view of the handle socket. Flg. Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates the head of my apparatus which is preferably triangular in formation and has a surface of wool felt or some like substance to which cloth will readily cling. On the upper face of block 1 is ahandle attaclr ing plate 2, preferably of wood, the side and end edges of which terminate short of the side and ends of head 1 in order that such plate may not come in contact with the floor, wall, or ceiling of a room or with a picture frame or like articles upon which the device is being used and mar the same by rubbing or scratching; the edges of said plate being preferably beveled as indicated in the drawing.

3 designates a handle portion which is preferably attached to the plate 2 by means of a socket member l, the body of which is provided with the base flanges 5, having the longitudinal slots 6 through which bolts may be projected into plate 2, and with a handle recess 7 for receiving handle 3; the bottom of member 4 having teeth 8 which are forced into plate 2 crosswise of the grain of the wood, when the socket is tightened there against as before mentioned.

ln the upper end of handle 3 is a socket 9 which is adapted to receive a pin 10 that projects from the end of the extension handle member 11; said handle member being provided with fingers 12 which are rigidly se cured to and project from the end of said members and are provided with inturned end hooks 13 at their loose ends, which are adapted to seat within the recesses 14C in the handle member 3 when the extension handle member is placed in position thereon.

ltigidly secured to opposite sides of hair dle 3, near its base, are the clamps 16, one end of each of which is free and curved as shown to provide a spring for anchoring the ing member which is provided with a middle loop 18 that is adapted to slip over the mop handle and seat within the loops of the permanent clamp members 16 after being pressed past the spring ends of said loops. Member 17 has the opposite arm portions 19 which are provided with the lower loops 20 which are formed by curving the lower ends of the wiresection on themselves, the loose end of the wire in each loop being wound on its own arm portion and turned downwardly and upwardly to form ahook 21; the manner of forming such detachable members being shown in Fig. XI, numerals 22, 22 indicating the wire sections from which the loops 1 20 and hooks 21 are formed. The two wire sections are arranged side by side with one end of each bent to form the loop 18 and hook 21. The binding members 23 are wound on the arm members 19 of the opposite wire sections and the wires when joined bent at the edges of loop 18 to form the unit indicated in Fig. X.

hen in use for cleaning hard wood floors the detachable mop cloth section and the auxiliary handle are not used, a dry cloth being placed on the floor, the wool felt block 1 placed thereagainst and the device moved back and forth over the floor in the usual manner, the clinging tendency of the cloth for the wool felt or like covering attaching them together sufiiciently for the purpose of moving back and forth over the floor.

For cleaning the ceiling or wall at a height inconvenient to reach with the ordinary handle the extension handle portion 11 is attached to the main handle portion 3 by inserting the pin 10 into the socket 9 and binding fingers 12 inwardly until the end portions 13 are seated firmly in their sockets in the main handle portion, when the ring or slide 15 is slipped down thereover to hold same firmly in position, when a ceiling of considerable height may be reached and cleaned in the same manner as described in reference to the hard wood floors.

When it is desired to mop or use a wet cloth for any purpose the detachable cloth attaching member is slipped over the handle portion and past the permanent clamp memi bers 16 into the loops as indicated in F I; the corner or end of the mop cloth is then slipped through loop 20, passed around the arm portion 19 and back between the cloth and arm to form a slip knot; the edges of the cloth are then brought back and hooked on hooks 21 and the free end or corner of the cloth passed under the head 1 and secured to the opposite side of the cloth attaching mems ber in the same manner. The device is then 5 used as an ordinary mop and when the Work is finished, the cloth and the cloth attaching member may be easily removed.

Having thus described my invention What 1 claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:

1. In a combination mop and hardwood lioor device, a suitable head and handle portion, a clamp member comprising a spring wire having one end attached to said handle and its free end looped and terminating close to said handle, and a cloth attaching member having a loop adapted for adjustment over said handle and on said clamp,

2. In a combination mop and hardwood floor device, a suitable head and handle portion, and a cloth attaching member adapted for adjustment on said handle portion, said cloth attaching member comprising side loops adapted to receive a cloth, a hook for holding said cloth when in position and means on said handle portion for holding said cloth attaching member.

3. In a combination mop and hardwood floor device, a suitable head and handle portion, and a cloth attaching member adapted for adjustment on said handle portion, said cloth attaching member comprising side arms, a loop on the free end of each arm, a hook projecting from the base of each arm into the adjacent loop, and means on said handle for holding said cloth attaching member, substantially as set forth.

In a combination mop and hardwood floor device, a suitable head and handle portion, clamp members permanently mounted on said handle portion, a cloth attaching member having a cent al loop adapted for adjustment over said handle and on said clamp members, arms depending from said central looped portion, base loops at. the free ends of said arms, and hooks on said arms projecting into said loops, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

A combination mop and hardwood lioor device, comprising a solid head member, triangular in cross section, a handle plate secured to one of the bases of said head with its edges set in from the edges of the head, a handle secured to said plate, and a cloth attaching member carried by said handle, said attaching member comprising permanent parts carried by the handle and a removable part adapted for adjustment thereoi'l.
