GUSTAVE ADOLPII KAIIL, OF SORENTO, ILLINOIS.
MOP-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 644,925, dated March 6, 1900.
Application filed September 11, 1899. Serial No. 730,108. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE ADOLPH KAHL, of the city of Sorento, Bond county, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to mops; and it 0011- sists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete invention, showing the same in operative position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. Sisa vertical sectional view showing the manner of its construction.
In the construction of my invention I provide a body 1, provided at each end with grooves 2, which are of such size as to allow the insertion of a rod 3, suitably bent to form the locking-clamp of the mop. To the bottom of the body 1 I secure in any desirable manner a strip 4 of rubber or other resilient material, which projects beyond said body at all sides. (See Fig. 1.) Its sides 5 are also provided with a slot 6, through which the rod 3 is passed when the same is placed in position. The rod 3 is so bent as to form a horizontal portion 7, which extends below the body and strip 4. from groove to groove and is arranged to support mop material 8, which is passed therethrough, and the same is held in a tight position by means of the rod 3 being adjusted upwardly by means of a strap 9, secured to a detent 10, formed upon the mophandle 11. The strap 9 is provided with a plurality of apertures 12, which are to be placed over the hook 13, formed on the de tent 10, to assume the position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To provide this locking feature, the strap is passed over the handle 14 of the rod 3 and placed over the hook by means of its aperture, as before stated. The handle 11 is secured in any desirable manner to the body 1.
The purpose of the resilient strip a is to use the same as a wiper and is used to dry up the moisture caused by mopping by inclining said mopqand bringing either of its edges in contact with the floor. To do this, it will be necessary to remove the mop material 8, so that the floor will not again be moistened while in this operation. This resilient material will perform practically the same function as the device now used for drying window-panes.
The operation is as follows: When it is de sired to place the mop material over the horizontal portion 7 of the rod 3, I release the strap 9 from the hook 13. The rod is then lowered to any desired position. The mop material is then passed over said horizontal portion of the rod to the thickness desired by the operator. The operator then places the strap 9 through and around the handle 14of the rod 3, pulling upwardly thereon, to a height where the mop material will come in close 001m in unication with the under surface of theresilient material 4. lVhen this is done, the operator passes the free end of the strap 9, having the apertures 12 therein, over the hook 13, formed on the detent 10. By this proce* dure the mop is in readiness for manipulation. In releasing the mop material after the floor has been scrubbed the strap is released from the hook and the rod 3 is pressed downwardly, thus releasing the mop material from the under surface of the resilient strip 4 and then removing it. The rod 3 may then be again pressed upwardly to bring its horizontal portion 7 to its highest point under the strip at and.
again locked. The operator then uses the mop as a wiper for drying the floor, which is done by bringing the ends of the strip 4 in communication with the floor. This is done by inclining the mop at any desired angle.
1. In a mop of the class described, composed. of a body carrying a resilient strip, a handle mounted on said body, an endless rod 3 passed around said body for supporting the mop material and a means for locking said rod at any desired. location, substantially'as specified.
2. In a mop of the class described, composed of a body, grooves formed in the ends of said body, a resilient strip secured to the bottom of said body, an endless rod passed over said body and guided in said grooves, a handle mounted in said body, a detent formed on said handle, a strap secured at oneend to In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
