Description

S. WALKER.
Stove Lid Lifter.
Patented Sept. 14, 1869.

Letters Patent No. 94,794,"dateel September 14, 1869.
STOVE-COVER LIFTER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SYLVENUS WALKER, of New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and-useful Improvement in Stove-Companions; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which the marks of reference correspond in all the figures.
My said improvements form a simple and compact implement, in which the parts are so arranged and combined that a greater number of implements is combined in one, and is applicable to adjusting, lifting, and operating the various parts of a stove, and the utensils used therewith for cooking, with great facility.
My invention also embodies a certain arrangement and combination of parts, which allow it to be held, with the hand, in one position, for adjusting, lifting, and operating said parts and utensils; also certain specific 'forms, construction, and arrangement, calculated to simplify the process of manufacture, and re-' duce the cost.
To enable others to make and use my invention, 1'
will proceed to describe the construction and operation of the same.
In the drawings annexed Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a section of a plate, showing the claws A and O as grasping the edge of the plate in the operation of lifting.
Figure 3 is a view of a kettle with a bail as lifted hythe hook E.
Figure 4 is a view of a stove-grate as being operated or tilted, in letting down the ashes, by means of the square opening D.
Figure 5 is a section of a stovc-cover, showing the claw A as in lifting the same.
Figure 6 is a sectionof a bowl, showing the claws A and B as grasping the edge of the bowl in the operation of lilting.
In the several figures- G represents a short metal bar, having a square opening, D, hook E, and claws A, B, and O.
H represents a wooden handle, with a ferrule, i.
The bar-G is of cast-iron, or any suitable metal, upon one end of which is a shank, for fastening. the same to the handle H. This may be provided with a screw-thread, to be screwed into the handle H, which has a hole in its end for that purpose or the screw maybe omitted, and the shank may be driven in. (This shank is not shown in the drawings.)
The handle H, being of wood, is not liable to be- I come heated if it is left in the stove-cover, as shown in fig. 5.
It will be observed that the claw A serves for the purpose of lifting stove-covers; also, in connection with the short .claw O, for lifting heated plates, as shown in fig. 2; also, in connection with the claw B, for lifting heated bowls, as shown in fig. 6; with the hook E, for lifting pots and kettles by their bails, as shown in fig. 3; with the square opening or wrench D, for operating the stove-grate, or tilting the same, to let down the ashes, as shown in fig. 4.
In all of these various uses andoperations, it is not necessary to change its position ip the hand. 7
In implement-s of this class heretofore constructed fora similar purpose, and styled stove-cover lifters and dexters, it was necessary to change ends, and to turn them upside down, to adapt them to the various uses for which they were designed, while my invention is adapted to a greater variety of uses connected with a cooking-stove and utensils, by having the square opening or wrench D, for operating the grate combined therewith, forming a perfect union of parts, for the various uses to which it is adapted. I style it a union stove-companion, being more unique in appearance, and applicable to a greater variety of uses, yet more simple in construction, and of. less expense to manufacture.
handle, H, in the manner and for the purposes specified, as a new article of manufacture in design and figure.
2. A stove-companion, with a square opening or wrench, D, for operating the grate, with claws A B G and hook E, for lifting heated plates, bowls, kettles, pots, and stove-covers, combined and arranged substantially in the manner and for .the purposes set forth.
SYLVENUS \VALKER.
