Description

J. OLD.
Lid Lifter.
No. 55,894. Patented June 26, 1866.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH OLD, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
LIFTER FOR STOVE-COVERS AND CULINARY VESSELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,894, dated June 26, 1866.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH OLD, of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Combination of Hooks and Fixed Jaws, constituting a new article of manufacture in design, formed of one piece, and calculated for a universalholder and lifter for culinary purposes and'I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which the article is accurately'figured in two 1 positions, clearly showing the pattern and design of my holder.
The nature of my invention consists in forming a universal lifter cast in one piece, with all its parts on one end, the other prolonged into a handle, E, having a pair of fixed jaws, so that one end orjaw, A, is a superior griddle-lifter, and, in combination with the other smaller jaw, B, specially adapted for handling pie-plates, dishes, pans, and, in short, applicable to purposes too numerous to enumerate, while the hooks (J D are adapted to lifting oi'f boilers, kettles, smoothingirons, and numerous other purposes, being an article adapted to all purposes arising at the kitchen-fire or cooking-stove.
I am aware that an article of manufacture, Patent N 0. 33,7 84, consists of a metal bar provided at one end with two claws and at the other end with three claws for the purpose of lil'tin g heated plates, stove-covers, 85c. Changing the ends when heated by use is very apt to burn the hand. Besides, the shape of the claws and their arrangement being defective for universal use led me to construct various patterns and designs and test them, which finally resulted in a combination of form that meets the desired end,the figure of which is clearly shown.
I am also aware of various combinations patented, such as No. 31,541, consisting of a curved prong and tongue combined, and secured in the end of a suitable handle; No. 33,587, with two pr iections-one a cover-lifter, the other a poker; No. 48,676, combined cover-lifter, carpet-stretcher, 850., formed of two or more combined pieces; all of which I disclaim, as also No. 50,537, a tool and handle, combining a shovel and cover-lifter.
The superiority I claim consists in the curve, size, and position of the two hooks C D, the configuration and combination of the fixedjaws A 13, arranged on the one end, while the other is prolonged into a handle, E, being a neat and convenient article to handle, made either of common cast metal or malleable iron, as a new article for the trade of the specified form and pattern.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The described universallifter, constructed with hooks O D, in combination with the fixed jaws A B at one end, the other being prolonged into a handle, E, arranged in the manner and for the purpose specified, as a new article of manufacture in design and figure.
