UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE D. WHEELOOK, OF MAYVILLE, WISCONSIN.
COAL-HEATING- BAKER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,155, dated June 17, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssE D. WHEELooK, of Mayvile, in the county of Dodge, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Machine for Baking, called the Coal-Heating Baker; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to. the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a cheap machine or implement for family baking purposes and is to be used either upon a hot or cold cooking stove, a griddle or cover having been previously removed for that purpose and heated with charcoal or stove coal.
To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my machine either of tin, copper, sheet iron, cast iron, or a combination of a part or all of them, and is to be either round, square or oblong, somewhat in the shape of an ordinary tin pail, flaring at the top and also a little flaring at the bottom.
Figure 1 in the accompanying drawing represents the exterior of the machine; A, the cover fastened by a hinge to the top and on one side of the implement. B represents the handle fastened to the two sides thereof. D in Fig. 1 represents the top of the furnace with a circular piece of iron with projecting points resting thereon, and C the draft door.
Fig. 2 represents a part of the exterior, and also the interior of the machine. D represents in Fig. 2, as in Fig. 1, the cover and top of the furnace fastened in like manner as the other cover represented by A in Fig. 1; E, a descending flue or tube for the purpose of passing off through the bottom of the machine, the smoke and fumes of the coal. This tube is made in two parts, the
one sliding into the other, for the convenience of lengthening or shortening the same, and is fastened to the bottom of the implement. F is the space between the tube and walls g g of the inner chamber Y for the reception of the coal. H is the bottom of the chamber perforated with holes for facilitating the draft and passing through the ashes into the chamber I below.
Fig. 3 represents a round cast iron piece with projecting points, which I place upon the top of the inner cover, when closed, for the purpose of regulating the heat, and prevent scorching upon which is placed the article to 'be cooked.
Fig. 4 represents the bottom, made of copper or other metal grooved so as to fit the ordinary opening on the to of stoves.
When I wish to use my ba (er, I fill the chamber F with coal, ignite the same and open the draft door C, at the same time closing the top of the furnace or cover D. I then remove one of the griddles from an ordinary cooking stove and place the bottom of the baker therein. I then place the cast iron piece with projecting points-Fig. 3upon the top of the cover D and thereon place a tin or other dish containing the article to be baked, and close the cover A, and in a short time baking is accomplished.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The use of the descending flue or tube (E) in two parts, the on sliding into the other so that the same can be lengthened or shortened at pleasure, for the purpose of passing off the fumes and smoke of the coal burned in the chamber F in combination with the said chamberv (F) and the perforated bottom H) and top (D) for baking purposes, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name the 13th day of February A. D. 1856.
JESSE D. WHEELOOK.
In presence of E. B. BOWEN, I B. F. WHEELOOK. was
