Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 8, 1909.
Patented Feb. 1, 1910.,
Serial No. 516,722. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I ANTTI REINIKKA, a citizen of the United gtates, residing at Govan, in the county of Lincoln and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention furnishes a lock construction particularly designed for trunks, chests and the like. The striking feature of the invention is the hidden lock hereinafter explained. The illustrations in the accompanying drawings show a double lock device, wherein the hidden lock is combined with the ordinary swinging hasp lock generally used on trunks. Should the swinging hasp for any reason be destroyed or removed or fail for any reason to be secured and engaged by the turning of the key when it is desired to lock the trunk or chest, then the hidden lock will nevertheless be effective. The use of a double lock also adds greater security and strength to the trunk or chest.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the lock as attached to a broken-away portion of a trunk, Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same the trunk being shown in section, Fig. 3, is a view of the plate to be attached to the lid of the trunk and carrying the dogs as a connecting means to the portion of the lock secured to the body of the trunk, Fig. 41-, is a detailed View of a slidable plate constituting a portion of the lock to be attached to the main body of the trunk carrying a dog to engage the swinging hasp connected to the lid of the trunk, means for engaging the dogs 011 the plate attached to the lid of the trunk and a notch to engage the key for throwing the plate back and forth in looking and unlocking the trunk, and Fig. 5 is a back view of the complete lock detached.
To the casing 10 is riveted a boxing 11, slidably engaging between the two, a plate 12, carrying a dog 13 and said plate pro vided with the opening 14 and the open cut 15 and the notch 16. To the front of the casing 10 is also secured a shield 17 adapted to engage the outer surface of the swinging hasp 18. Through the shield 17 and the casing 10 extends an opening 19 adapted to receive a key, such key adapted to rotate on the key post 20. The plate 21 is adapted to be secured to the lid of the trunk in such a manner that the dogs 22 and 23 will rest horizontally on the undersurface of the front thereof, directly above the casing 10 and so that the said dogs 22 and 23 will drop down ward through the openings 24 and 25 in the casing 10 and the dog 22 projects also through the opening 14 in the plate 12 while the dog 22 will be immediately in front of the cut away portion 15 in the plate 12. 'A plate 26 to which is hinged the swinging hasp 18 is secured to the lid of the trunk on the outer front surface thereof directly over the plate 21. An opening 27 is )rovided in the casing 10 for the reception of a staple 28 secured to the swinging hasp 18.
hen it is desired to lock the trunk, it is only necessary to insert the key into the opening 19 and upon the key post 20, press down the swinging hasp 18 firmly against the casing 10, turn the key to the right, the key will then engage the notch 16 and carry the plate to the right sufficient to throw the dog 13 through the staple 28, and the horizontal cap 29 to locking engagement with the dogs 22 and 23, thereby effecting a double locking function. In order to unlock the trunk it is only necessary to reverse the action of the key by turning it to the left, thereby releasing all of the dogs from their locking engagements.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a lock, the combination of a main lock frame having a slidable plate secured to the back of and horizontal with the main lock frame and carrying a dog for locking engagement with a swinging hasp, the staple of which is adapted to extend through an opening in the main lock frame and into the path of the dog on the slidable plate and be brought into locking engagement therewith by the horizontal sliding of the plate by means of a key rotating upon a key post constituting a part of the lock and brought into contact with the plate at the notch in the lower edge thereof, said slidable plate profirst above described and substantially as 10 vided With a top horizontal cap in Which is Set r an opening and a ut-away ortion ith In testnnony whereof I have afiixed my an upper plate provided with a air f do signature, 111 presence of two witnesses. adapted to enter said opening and cut-away ANTTI REINIKKA portion, said upper plate adapted to be secured to the lid of a trunk and be brought Wit e into locking engagement with said main lock J. F. LOME,
portion by the horizontal sliding of the plate MARY SHOLDERER.
