Application filed August is, 1909. Serial N... 513,456.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK D. Tones, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looks; and it has for its object to provide a lock of simple and improved construction which may be readily utilized in places where a padlock in connection with a hasp and staple has been heretofore utilized.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and efiicient lock adapted to be secured permanently in a stationary position and to be used in connection with a pivoted hasp.
Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices.
WVith these and other ends in View which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim. Y
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being however understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front View showing the improved lock mountedin position. Fig. 2 1s a front view showing the lock with a face plate removed, and with the lock-engaging hasp in engagement with the tumbler. Fig. 3 is a front view of the lock with the face plate removed and showing the tumbler engaged by the key and in retracted position. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 44: in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a horizontal transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 5- 5 in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail View of the key. Fig. 7 is a perspective detail view showing the lock-engaging hasp, detached.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like charactersof reference. The casing of the improved lock comprises Specification of ,Let ii Paten Patented Jan. 18, .1910.
a backplate 8 anda face plate 9 which are spaced apart by a spacing flange '10 and connected by suitable connecting means such as a screw 11. A tumbler 12 actuated by a spring 13 l is arranged slidably between the back and face plates of the casing, said tumbler being guided between pins 14: which project from the back plate through apertures 15 in the face plate, The back and face plates of the casing afford bearings for the key post 16.
The spacing members 10 interposed between the back and face plates of the casing are mutilated or interrupted at one of the lower corners, forming a gap or opening 17 The hasp C used "in connection with the lock comprises a pivotally supported lever 18 having an arm 19 extending approximately at right angles from its free end; said arm 19 having a beveled nose 20 and a tumbler engaging notch 21. A knob or handle 22 is also provided whereby the hasp may be conveniently manipulated.
In operation, the lock casing may be secured upon a door post 23 and the hasp u on a door or closure 24, as indicated in Fig. 1. The aperture 17 for the admission of the hasp being disposed adjacent to the lower edge of the lock casing will be protected from snow, rain and the like. 'VVhen the door or closure 24 is adjacent to the post 23, the hasp C may be swung upwardly crossing the arm 19 to enter the casing throughthe gap or opening 17, the spring actuated tumbler being displaced laterally by the beveled nose 20 of the arm 19 until,
provided which may be inserted into the usual notch in the key post until it may be turned to engage the tumbler 12 and to retract the latter against the tension of the spring 13,-thus releasing the hasp and permitting the latter to drop from the lock casingby gravity which may be assisted by the hand of the operator.
The improved look as will be seen is simple in construction and durable, .and it hasbeen found to be thoroughly efiicient in operation. l 7 Having thus described the invention, what 1s claimed 'is' In a look, a casing comprising back and face plates, and a spacing member 1111361'- rupted to form a gap at one of the lower corners of the casing, pins projecting from the back plate through the face plate, a spring actuated tumbler guided between said pins, and a key post supported for rotation adjacent to the tumbler; in combination with a pivotally supported hasp having a laterally extending terminally beveled arm forming a nose provided with a tumbler engaging notch. 10
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
