springs, and has for an object to provideV av device of this character wherein will beemployed novel and effective means adapted for engagement at one end with the gate or closure and at the other end vwith a portion of a fence or the like, and which when operatively applied will effectively hold the gate normally in its closed position.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a spring of the above stated character that will be extremely simple in construction and which may be manufactured at a relatively low cost.
The above mentioned and other objects are attained by the construction, combina-l tions and arrangements of parts, as disclosed on the drawing, set forth in this specifica-k tion, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure l is a front view of a gate and a portion of a fence showing my improved gate spring in its applied position. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the spring. F ig. 3 is a detail horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Upon reference to the drawing, there is shown a gate A which is hinged to the post B of a fence structure C. A bracket or retaining member 1 is secured by means of fastening devices 2 to the panels or to any other part of the fence structure at a pointadjacent to the post B. This bracket or re-V taining member preferably comprises a plate which is formed with a longitudinally extending boss 3 1n which is formed a groove 4f. The groove communicates at one endV with a recess 5 formed 1n the boss and at the other end the groove opens directly onto the bracket or `retaining member.
Adjacent to one end of the boss 3, the plate forming the bracket is provided with anoutwardly extending lug or stop shoulder 6 which is adapted to form with 1the boss 3 a guide channel 7. y A bracket or retaining member 8 is secured to the panels of the gate A, and as shown, the said bracket o-r retaining member vis identical in con struction with the bracket or retaining member l and it is thought that the debody portion of the plate forming the said scription of the former will sufiice for the latter.
