POST.
Specification of LettersV Patent.
Patented .Tune 23, 1908.
Application filed. July 29, 1907. Serial No. 386,030.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HrEAM H. GEIssoM, a` citizen of the United States, residing at Balbec,l in the county of Jay and State of lndiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fences and' more particularly to Wire fences, and has for its object to provide a wire fence structure including plastic posts which will be arranged to `give a maximum of strength to the fence with a minimum of material and which will provide a novel and secure means for fastening the various portions together.
Other obj ects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be undertsood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of thev corner post and brace bar; Fig. 2 is a section through the corner post and brace bar.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a corner'post 6 which is octagonal in cross section and from one face has a plurality of staples 10, projecting therefrom. Formed in the opposite face of the corner post from the just mentioned face, adjacent to the upper end of the post, there is a recess 11, and a passage 12 is formed through the post, opening through the face thereof just above the uppermost staple 10, and' communicating with the recess 11. A diagonal brace bar 13 has its upper end engaged in the recess 11, and this brace bar has a central strengthening rod 14 extending from its upper end and through the passage 12, this rod having its extremity outwardly of the post bent into an eye 15 lying in spaced relation to and in alinement with the uppermost staple 10.
. In constructing a fence, line wires 16 are disposed upon the staples 10, the uppermost line wire lying between the uppermost staple 10 and the eye 15 of the strengthening rod 14,
and a vertical confining rod 17 is engaged through the eye 15 and the staples 10 outwardly of the line wires, to hold the latter in osition, this confining rod also holding the race bar in position, as will be readily understood. A tie wire 18 is engaged with the lower portion of the post 6 andwith the lower extremity of the brace bar 13, in the usual manner. The staples are sufiiciently short to make it necessary to drive the confining rods into position, and thus good rubbing contact is had between the line wires and confining rods, vand these rods extend into the ground at their lower ends. so that they form ground wires to conduct into the ground lightning which may strike the fence, thus preventing injury to stock in contact with the fence.
What is claimed is:
In a fence structure, the combination with a plastic post having a recess/formed in one face adjacent to its upper end, and having a passage formed therethrough, said passage communicating with the recess at one end and opening through the opposite face from the recess at its other end, a plurality of vertically alining staples embedded in the post and projecting beyond the face through which the passage opens, one of said staples lying just below the passage, a brace bar engaged at its upper end in the recess, said brace bar being formed of plastic material, a strengthening rod in the brace bar, said strengthening rod extending beyond the upper end of the brace bar and having said extended portion engaged through the passage of the post, said extended portion being formed into an eye at its extremity, said eye being located in alinement with the staples, line wires disposed upon the staples, and a coniining rod engaged in the staples and in the eye of the strengthening rod, outwardly of the line wires.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HIRAM H. GRISSOM.
