To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, Josnr AUGs'rnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockville, in the county of Tolland and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tailors Fitting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an apparatus which is used by tailors for measuring men and women for garments.

It is particularly adapted for the measurementot female figures, although it is applicable to the measurement of male figures.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple apparatus which can be applied to a human torni and readily and quickly adjusted for obtaining an accurate measurement of any ligure, and then instantly` removed and separated into sections, and each section used as a pattern for cutting the goods for the garment which will tit the figure to which the apparatus has been applied.

The apparatus which is illustrated as embodying the invention is made in eight quickly connectible and disconnectible sections. Each section is formed of adjustably joined flexible straps and bands and is designed to correspond to one of the eight g'ores of which a garment, such as a womans coat, is usually made up.

Figure l of the accompanying drawings shows a plan of the eight sections of the apparatus in various adjustments. The tour sections on the left being separated, the two sections on the right of the center being joined, and the other two sections, on the extreme right, being partly joined and partly separated. Fig'. 2 shows a part of two sections oi?l the apparatus on much larger scale in order to better illustrate the means employed for adjusting the several parts and t'or connecting and disconnecting' the sections. Fig. 3 shows a front view of the apparat-us itted to a female ligure. Fig'. l shows a back view of the apparatus litted to the same ligure.

The section A is that which corresponds to the front gore on the lett side of the middle of the garment. The section B corresponds to the gore on the front at the left side. The section C corresponds to the gore on t-he back at the let't side. The section D corresponds to the gore at the back on the left side of the middle. The section E is the gore at the back on the right side of the middle. gore. The section G is the gore on the front of the right side. The section H is the front gore on the right side of the middle. The straps and bands of all oit the sections are made of flexible webbing', tape, or the like fabric.

The section A has two vertically extending straps al, a2. These straps are connected wy a shoulder band a3, a neck band at, a chest band a5, a bust band a, a waist band al, and a hip band as. These bands are so termed from the positions they occupy on the person being' measured. The several bands and straps are connected by stud and socket :tasteners. Preferably a number ot studs a9 are attached to the straps, and a number of sockets al@ are attached to the bands adjacent to the several points of connection of the bands and straps. This enables the heights of the points or" connection of the bands with the straps, and the distances between the straps, at the points ot' connection of the bands, to be quickly altered.

The section B has two vertically extending straps b1, b2. These straps are connected by a shoulder band b3, a front arm band b4, a chest band b5, a bust band b, a waist band 217, and a hip band bs. These several bands and straps are connected by stud and socket fasteners, there being a number of studs 7)" attached to the straps, and a number of sockets (D10-attached to the bands adjacent to the several points of connection, to enable the heights of the bands on the straps and the distance between the straps to be quickly altered.

The section C has two vertical straps c1, c2, which are connected by a shoulder' band c3, a shoulder-blade band ct, a back-arm band c5, a bust-line band c, a waist band 07, and a hip band o8. These straps and bands are provided with detachable tastening studs c and sockets C10.

The section D has two vertical straps di, cl2. These are connected at the top by a shoulder band d and neck band (Z4, and below by a back band CZ, a bust-line band d, a waist bandv CZ?, and a hip band (ZS. These bands and straps are provided with numerous studs d and sockets 10, whereby they may be connected in various relations.

The section E has two vertical straps c, e2. These are connected by a shoulder band e3 and neck band et, a back band e5, a bustline band c, a waist band e?, and a hip band The section F is the right side back es. These parts are provided with studs c and sockets 61, by means of which they may be connected in different relations.

The section F has two vertical straps fl, f2, which are connected by a shoulder band f3 and a back-arm band f4, a shoulder-blade band f5, a bust-line band f, a waist band f7, and a hip band fs. These parts are provided with numerous studs fg and sockets flo, whereby they may be connected in various relations.

The sect-ion G has two vertical straps gl, f/g, and these are connected by a shoulder band gi', a front-arm band g4, a chest band g5, a bust band g, waist band gi, and hip band gs. Studs gg and sockets g1 are provided for fastening these parts in various relations.

The section H has two vertical straps /1., il?, connected at the top by a shoulder band h5" and neck band It, and below by a chest band 71.-", a bust band it, a waist band 71T, and a hip band ILS. Studs /Lf and sockets l1?" are provided for adj ustably fastening these straps and bands.

rrpplied along the outer edges of each of the vertically extending' straps of the several sections, is a member of a separable fastener which is designed to quickly fasten and unfasten the several sections when desired. rlhe fastener illustrated is of the type disclosed in YUnited States Patent No. 788.317 issued April 1905. One member of this fastenei` is composed of a series of links e, and the other member is composed of a series of hooks f1, which members are engaged and interlocked by drawing down the slide c. in the manner common to this style of fastening. (Fig. 2.)

The sections are joined by engaging the chain members on the edges and drawing down the slides, and they are disconnected by simply pulling apart the straps and causing the slide. to slip up in the usual way of separating the members of such a chain fastening. The section H is joined with the section G by engaging the fastening member 71. with the fastening member ff and drawing down the slide (/12. rllhe section G connected with the section F by engaging the fastening member g1 with the fastening member fu. and drawing down the slide f. The section F is connected with the section E by engaging the fastening member fm with the fastening member e and drawing down the slide cl2. as shown in Fig. l. The section E is connected with the section D by engaging the fastening member em with the fastening' member Zu and drawing down the slide (ZV-1 The section D is connected with the section C by engaging the fastening member .13 with the fastening member cn and drawing down the slide (ZM. The section C is connected with the section B by engaging the fastening member c with the fastening member b and drawing down the slide 512. The section B is connected with the section A by engaging the fastening member 513 with the fastening member all and drawing down the slide blt. Then the sections are connected in this manner, the apparatus may be placed upon the person to be measured, and then the section A is connected with the section H by engaging the fastening member am with the fastening member 71.12 and drawing down the slide al". After the several sections are secured together in this manner upon the person to be measured, beginning at the top the several bands are disconnected from the straps by separating the sockets from the studs. Then the bands and straps are connected by engaging' the proper sockets with the proper studs so that the straps and bands will be held in such manner as to tit and lie smoothly on the figure being measured. Then the straps and bands have been adjusted and fastened by the sockets and studs so as to lit thev form, the several sections are simply pulled apart on the lines of the separable chain fastenings. These separated sections have the outlines of the seve-ral gores necessary to form the garment which will tit the figure of the person upon which the apparat-us has been fitted. The sections are then merely vlaid upon the cloth from which the garnient is to be made, and the several gores cut directly from these sections without requiring any further pattern.

This apparatus can be adjusted, by raising and lowering the several bands on the straps and by shortening or lengthening the con nections of the bands with the straps, to tit a person of any size or shape, either tall or short. stout or slim, and then instantly removed and used as a pattern, without necessitating the cutting of any further pattern. The parts of course can also be adjusted so as to provide for a full breast. or for a fiat breast. and for a straight back or front or a tight back or front, according to the style of the garment to be made.

The invention claimed is:

A. Htting apparatus comprising several separable sections. each section having a pair of vertical straps and a plural number of horizontal bands, made of flexible fabric. socket and stud fastenings applied to the several straps and bands, whereby "aid bands may be connected higher and lower and also longer and shorter with said straps. and a member of a separable chain fastening applied to the outer edge of each strap for uniting the several sections.
