JOHN A. HELQUIST, OF BLUE ISLAND, ILLINOIS.
BURGLAR-ALARM.
Application filed February 19, 1909.
To all whom 'tt may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. HELQUls'r, a citizen of the United Stat-es, residing at Blue Island, in t-he county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglari-lrlarms, of which the following` is a specification.
My invention relates to burglar alarms, and the object thereof is to provide a device of this character which will prevent a person from surreptitiously gaining access to a house through a window.
Generally speaking', the invention contemplates the cooperation of a pair of devices carried by the upper and lower sash and adapted to cause a rapid series of noises sufficient to apprise any inmate of the house of the proposed entrance of a person through the window, upon the movement of either sash.
To the accomplishment of the recited object and others coordinate therewith, the preferred embodiment of my invention resides in that construct-ion and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illust-rated in the accompanying drawings, and embraced within the scope of the appended claim.
In said drawings: Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of the upper and lower window sashes and window frame showing the embodiment of my invention, and F ig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring more particularly to the drawings for a detailed description of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the window frame and 6 and 7, the upper and lower sash, respectively. Disposed vertically with respect to the upper sash is a metallic element 8 provided with denticulations and having deflected at substantially right angles thereto and at opposite terminals thereof the integrally formed ears 10, which are utilized conjunctively with screws or equivalent fastening means for securing the device to the sash.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 11, 1910.
serial No. 478,896.
On the top rail of the lower sash 7 and in juxtaposition to the metallic element S, I mount an angular bracket ll, the upper end of which is bifurcated, as at l2, to form a receptive space for the piece of spring` steel 13. This spring steel piece 13 extends in the direction of its length sufficient-ly to engage the longitudinally serrated edge 9 of the metallic element 8, and a slot 14; is provided on the inner side of the upper rail of the lower sash for the passage of said element. Now it will appear obvious that upon movement of the lower sash 7 the steel spring I3 will frictionally engage the denticulations of the element 8 and cause a rapid series of noises, and o-wing particularly to the disposition of the parts of the device on the window sashes the sound will be amplified and reverberated and in this manner warn a person in any part of a given house or dwelling upon the window of which this device is used.
It should be understood that in its broader aspects my invention comprehends the employment not only of the means described, but of equivalent means for performing the recited functions.
While the arrangement shown is thought, at the present time, to be preferable, it is desired to reserve the right to effect such modifications and variations thereof as may come fairly within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, is
In a burglar alarm, the combination of an element carried by the upper sash and having denticulations, an angular support mounted on the lower sash and having a bifurcated terminal, a spring secured in said terminal, said spring and element adapted to engage each other and cause a series of sounds in quick succession.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. HELQUIST.
Witnesses GEORGE E. HINMAN, ANDREW MORQUIST.
