Description

. dettati (giedre parte eine,
M. V. BRIGHAll/l, OF MANNSVILLE, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 94,557, dated September 7, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMP.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
Figure 3 is a broken vertical longitudinal section on the line :c :c of fig. 1.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like palts in each of the figures,
My invention is intended to furnish a convenient andV cheap clamp for use in pressing together and clamping flooring, doors, &c.,'while the saine are being secured; and
It consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement ofthe parts by means of which this result is accomplished, asis hereinafter fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing- A represents a narrow strip of board, having near one end a number of screws, B B, the points of which project through the lower side of said board or hedpiece, and are pointed, as shown in iig. 3.
Pivoted within a vertical longitudinal slot, a, at the opposite end of said bed-piece, is a lever, C, the short end of which projects below the board.
Pivoted Within the lever O, in a line with the bedpiece A, is one end of a pawl, I), the opposite end of which .engages with a toothed rack, E, so as to hold said lever in position.
As constructed, the operation of this device will be readily understood. The lever C being thrown back, the bed-piece A is placed with the end containing the pointed screws uponthe oor, and the opposite end projecting over the loose board, and said points pressed into the Wood. Uponraising--the lever, the loose board is now pressed firmly against the outside oorboard, and, by means of the pawl and rack, held in place until nailed or otherwise secured.
In order that this clamp may be rendered applicable to door-work, a strip, F, corresponding in width to the bed-piece A, is secured thereto by means of a pin, f,
passingthrough both parts. The outer end of the strip F projects to the rear, and has secured transverse] y to its lower side, at the end, a cleat, G. When attached to the bed-piece, the whole islaid upon the door, so that the cleat G will bear against one side or edge of the work, and the lower end .of the 'lever C upon the other, when, by raising said lever, the work will be compressed between its lower end and the cleat, and, by means of the pawl and rack firmly held and secured.
By providing a series of holes in the strip F for the pin j', the distance between the lever and cleat may be varied, so as to suit different kinds of work.
Having thus fully set, forth the nature and merits of my invention,
What I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe within-described clamp, consisting ofthe piece A, provided with the pointed screws B, and used either with or without the piece F, the lever C,.the pawl D, and the rack E', all constructed and arranged tooperate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set-my hand, this 29th `day of July, 1869.
M. V. BRIGHAM.
