LAVATORY.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. IVHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lavatories; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a portable toilet stand or lavatory, and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

The primary7 object of the invention is to produce a portable toilet stand or lavatory of simple and inexpensive construction for use in buildings and rooms where ruiming water is not supplied, the arrangement being such as to combine ina unitary structure a water supply tank forming a splash back, a portable stand to carry said tank, a wash bowl supported by said stand below said tank and movably mounted to swing upwardly at its outer edge, anda waste water-receptacle disposed below said bowl in a position to receive the water discharged therefrom.

A further object of the invention is to so associate with the stand, the bowl, tank, and waste water receptacle, as to enable their removal at' will and to correctly position said members respectively when replaced upon the stand.

A further object of the invention is to provide for supporting the bowl independently of the supply tank and waste water receptacle, and at the same time prevent the removal of said receptacle except when the bowl is raised.

A further object of the invention is to provide for folding the stand into a compact form to economize space in the matter of storage and shipment, and to facilitate handling.

A further object of the invention is to produce a portable lavatory of the character described which shall be neat, pleasing, and sanitary.

The above objects are attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanying Specification of Letters Patent.

Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through said parts, showing by dotted lines the bowl raised to release the waste water receptacle. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stand and water tank, the latter being raised from the stand, and the foldable members of the stand being shown by dotted lines in their folded positions. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the bowl. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a portion of the stand, showing the pivoted rods which support the bowl folded inwardly and the circular plate upon which the waste water receptacle stands extended as when in position for use. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary View partly in section, showing the manner of connecting the bowl with the stand to enable the outer edge of the bowl to be swung upwardly.

Referring to the numerals of reference, l designates the legs of the stand which are preferably formed of wood and are connected at their upper ends by the back strip 2. Secured to and supported upon the upper ends of said legs so as to extend between them is a cross piece 3. To the lower ends of the legs l are pivotally attached at 5 the inner ends of the curved arms 6. The outer end of each of the arms 6 is provided with an eye or socket 7. Seated at their lower ends in the sockets 7 of the arms G are thc rods 8 having the inwardly extending horizontal portions 9 at their upper ends which are pivotally secured at l() to the under face of the cross piece 3. The legs l, the cross piece 3, the rods S pivoted to said cross piece, and the pivoted arms 6 having the sockets in which the lower ends of the rods 8 are seated, form the portable stand of the lavatory, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The water tank 1l is provided with a recess in the bottom thereof which receives the cross piece 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, whereby said tank may be removably seated upon said stand in a manner to retainit securely in place. To enable the tank to be readily handled for refilling, it is provided with a hinged bail l2, which when the tank is in position upon the stand, may be swung to a horizontal position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in which position said bail serves as a towel rack. To maintain said bail in said l horizontal position, its ends which extend within the tank, are provided with angular portions 13 which engage the rear wall of the tank, as shown in Fig. 2.

The iear marginal portion of the bowl is designed to conform to and engage under the forward edge of the cross piece 8, and is provided wit-li the projecting end or terminal portions 15 in which are formed the notches 1G. These notches are adapted to receive the curved ribs 17 which are secured at t to the ends of the cross piece 3, and

curve downwardly therefrom.

To place the bowl in position upon the stand, the forward edge is raised and the Y lower ends of the ribs 1T are entered in the notches 16, when by swinging downwardly the forward edge of the bowl, the part-s may be caused to assume the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with the under face of the margins of the bowl on each side thereofresting upon the horizontal portions 9 of the rods 8, and the edge of the rear marginal portion of the bowl engaging undcil the lower edge of the cross piece 3. By this arrangement the bowl is removably supported in place in a manner to enable its forward edge to be raised without detaching the bowl from the stand.

To provide a receptacle for the waste,I

water, a hollow pedestal 18 is provided having a flaring top 19 and a laterally Vprojecting circular base 20. This pedestal receptacle is placed below the bowl in position to receive the waste water discharged therefrom through the opening 21 in the bottoni thereof adapted to be closed by the plug or stopper 22. That said receptacle may be properly positioned below the bowl to receive the discharged waste water, and to permit the bottoni of the bowl to swing downwardly into the flaring opening thereof, a circular plate is provided, of the character of a metallic inat, having a rear vertical flange 24. This inat or plate is rig idly secured between the outer ends the curved arms C in suoli position that when the pedestal or receptacle 1S is placed thereon with the margin of its base against said flange, said pedestal will be correctly positioned with respect to the bowl.

Owing to the fact that the lower portion of the bowl dependswithin the flaring top 19 of the pedestal or receptacle 18, it is necessary to raise said bowl to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 to remove said pedestal or replace it, and it is for that purpose that the bowl is hinged to the stand or so connected therewith as to enable it to be tilted thereon, as described. Then the forward edge of the bowl is raised, the rear end portions 15 thereof swing downwardly upon the curved ribs 17 which lie in the notches in said end portions and serve as a guide for the bowl during said movement, the fulcrum upon which the bowl swings being the points upon the horizontal portions 9 of the rods 8 on which the under side of the bowl rests.

Because of the fact that the bottoni of the bowl depends within the flaring mouth of the pedestal and the base of said pedestal is confined by the flange 21 upon the inat the accidental displacement or overturning" of the pedestal is obviated, as it cannot be removed nor its position materially changed without first swinging the bowl 'upwardly to free the upper end thereof.

Then the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 1, a portable toilet stand or lavatory is produced which is compact and pleasing in appearance. The water supply tank 11 being comparatively wide and of reduced transverse area, serves the purpose of a splash back. Said tank is provided with a suitable water cock 25 which projects over the bowl to enable the water in the tank to be drawn into the bowl as required. The tank is closed by means of a removable top 26 having a back piece thereon in which may be placed a mirror 27.

lVhen desired, the stand may be folded to reduce it to a comparatively small area, by disengaging the lower ends of the rods S from the sockets in the arms and swinging said rods inwardly, aftei which said arms carrying the mat or plate 23, may be swung upwardly against said rods, as clearly shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3.

It will be noted, that, because of the fact that the outer ends of the arnis G are connected to the opposite sides of the mat 23, said arms are rendered sul'ciently rigid to afford a firm support for the lower ends of the rods 8, which are seated in sockets therein, thereby preventing movement of said rods upon their pivots 10. It will further be observed that the arms (3 together with the circular mat when said parts are extended, form a base for the stand which serves to brace the stand against tipping. The presence of the circular mat on which the discharge receptacle is placed prevents any injury to the floor or carpet, which might result from placing said receptacle directly thereon.

Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A portable lavatory, comprising a snpporting stand, a wash bowl mounted on said stand, a water supply tank upon said stand engaging the rear margin of said bowl and so associated therewith as to form a splash back therefor, and a waste water receptacle removably positioned below the bowl.

2. A lavatory comprising a portable aliases stand, a water supply tank mounted thereon, a bowl below said tank supported on the stand to swing upwardly, and a waste water receptacle below the bowl having an opening at the top into which the bottom of the bowl normally depends.

3. A lavatory comprising a port-able stand, a water supply tank mounted thereon, a bowl below said tank supported on the stand to swing upwardly, a waste water receptacle below the bowl having' an opening at the top into which the bottom of the bowl normally depends, and a floor mat forming a portion of the base of the stand for positioning said receptacle with respect to said bowl.

4L. A portable lavatory comprising a stand, a cross piece at the top thereof, a bowl supported upon the stand and at its rear edge engaging under said cross piece, and a water supply tank removably seated over said cross piece and engaging with its lower edge the margin of said bowl;

A lavatory comprising a stand having legs, a cross piece connecting said legs, supporting rods connected with said cross piece, a bowl supported on said rods and ointedly connected with the stand to swing upwardly, and a water tank removably seated on said cross piece.

G. A portable lavatory comprising a stand having legs, a cross piece connecting said legs at the top, a water supply tank supported on said cross piece, vertical supporting rods having horizontal portions connected with the stand, a bowl mounted upon the horizontal portions of said rods, and arms extending from the legs and engaging said rods at their lower ends.

7.' A portable lavatory, comprising a stand, a water supply tank thereon, a bowl mounted on the st-and to swing upwardly, a waste water receptacle, and a floor mat for the waste water receptacle connected with the stand and having an abutment flange so disposed as to position said receptacle thereon with respect to said bowl.

8. A portable lavatory, comprising a stand having legs, a cross piece connecting said legs atA the top, a water supply tank supported upon said cross piece, vertical supporting rods having horizontal portions pivoted to said cross piece, a bowl mounted upon said supporting rods, and arms eX- tending from said legs and detachably engaging said rods.

9. A portable lavatory consisting of a stand, comprising legs and a cross piece, a water tank mounted upon said cross piece, supporting rods having horizontal portions pivoted to the cross piece of the stand, a bowl removably mounted upon said rods, arms pivoted to the lower ends of said legs to swing upwardly, said arms engaging the supporting rods to hold them in position, and said rods and arms being adapted to fold between' said legs.

A portable lavatory comprising a stand, a water tank carried by said stand, supporting rods forming a complementary part of the stand, a bowl carried on said rods, a waste water receptacle, and a positioning mat for said receptacle, said mat lying upon the floor and connecting the lower' ends of the supporting rods of the stand.
