ATTORNEYS trite 3,006,705 COMBINATION TABLE, SAN'D BGX WADING POOL Billy Oliver Williams, McLemoresville, Tenn, and Johnny Leon Williams, Box 184, McKenzie, Tenn. Filed Oct. 14, 1957, Bar. No. 690,092 4 Claims. (Cl. 311-3) This invention is an article of furniture primarily for .children, which can be used as a picnic or study table, as a sand box or as a wading pool. 1
The invention comprises essentially an open topped box, conveniently rectangular, having a bottom and vertical side walls, the bottom and side walls being joined in watertight relation. The walls are braced by gusset plates secured to adjacent walls at their meeting corners. These gusset plates also provide anchorages for table legs. The side Walls are also provided with sockets for holding a canopy over the box when the box is open side up for holding sand or water, or when the box is open side down, and usable as a picnic or study table.
The invention will now be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the article, with supports omitted;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a canopy;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the article in use as a table;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a bench used with the table;
FIG. 5 is a view of a detail.
Referring now to these drawings, the box as shown in FIG. 1 has its open side facing upwardly and is in a position for holding sand or water. The box comprises a fiat bottom 2, to which is secured vertical walls 4, the joints 6 between the walls and bottom, and the joints 8 between the walls being watertight. The edges 5 of walls 4 are reversely folded to eliminate any sharp edges. All exposed corners and edges are coated with plastic to prevent injury to the children. The side walls are secured to each other and braced in position by four triangular gusset plates 10 secured to the walls at their meeting corners.
Passing through each gusset plate and secured therein is a socket tube 12, this tube being secured to one of the vertical walls 4. As shown in FIG. 1, these sockets are open at the gusset plate end; the other ends are closed. These sockets 12 are for table legs 22.
A pair of opposite side walls are provided with tubular sockets 14, open at both ends.
Where the device is to be used as a sand box or wading pool, the box of FIG. 1 is simply filled with sand or water. A canopy C comprising a simple frame made of rods 16 covered with canvas or the like 17, is supported by tubular standards 18 each provided with an annular stop 28 near their lower ends, slightly larger than sockets 14. In use, the lower ends of standards 18 are inserted in sockets 14, the stops resting against the upper edges of the sockets and the canopy C thereby supported. The canopy C is detachably secured to its supporting standards by any convenient connection 21.
When the device is to be used as a table, the box is reversed from the position shown in FIG. 1, and tubular legs 22, tipped with rubber 24, inserted in the four leg sockets 12. The canopy standards 18 are now inserted in their sockets 14 until the stops 20 rest against the edges of sockets 14 and the canopy C thereby supported.
The several parts of the box may be made of wood, metal, and are preferably coated with non-poisonous paint. The canopy C may be provided with a shower attachment when the article is used as a wading pool.
rates Eater The entire assembly may 'be disassembled by removing the legs 22, removing the canopy standards and folding the canopy, so that the entire article may be folded up for carrying in the trunk of a car, or for storage.
There is preferably provided with the table, one or more benches, shown in FIG. 4. Such a bench comprises a flat seat 24, of sheet metal. Two legs 26 are formed of a bent pipe, integral with an extension 28 extending under the seat. Similar legs 30 with integral extension 32, are provided for the other side. The mid-sections of extensions 28 and 32 are held in place by bracket 34 secured on the underside of seat 24, the two mid-sections being held together by a cotter pin or the like 36 passing through bracket 34 and the mid-sections of 28 and 32.
We claim:
1. An article of furniture, comprising a rectangular table top and vertically extending side walls extending downwardly therefrom, four socket members carried by said side walls at the respective corners of the article, table legs detachably positioned in said corner socket members, two additional socket members carried respectively at about the middle of one pair of said opposite side walls, a canopy, supporting standards, provided with annular stops, for said canopy, said standards being seated in said two additional socket members with their annular stops bearing against their corresponding socket member.
2. The combination of claim 1, wherein the table top and side Walls are watertight at their meeting edges and wherein the article may be turned upside down to serve as a wading pool or sand box, and wherein the standards for the canopy are then mounted in the opposite ends of said two additional sockets, with their annular stops hear ing against their respective socket members.
3. An article of furniture, comprising a rectangular table top and vertically extending side walls, meeting at the respective corners, a horizontal gusset plate at each corner, each gusset plate being secured to the adjacent edges of said side walls at such corner, four socket members each having one end open, passing through respective gusset plates and each secured to an adjacent side wall, table legs detachably seated in said socket members, two additional socket members carried by two opposite side walls, a canopy, and supporting standards provided with annular stops, for said canopy, said standards being detachably positioned in said two additional socket members with their annular stops positioned against their respective supporting socket.
4. The combination of claim 3, wherein the table top and side walls are watertight at their meeting edges, and wherein the article may be turned upside down to serve as a wading pool or sand box, and wherein the standards for the canopy are then mounted in opposite ends of said two additional sockets with their annular stops bearing against their respective socket members.
