EDWARD R. VASCONGELLOS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR GENTLEMENS HATS.
9dsh062.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1909.
Application filed October 30, 1908. Serial No. 460,369.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enwam) R. VasooN- comes, a citizen of the United States, residing at V0. 3304 Cottage Grove avenue, in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Gentlemens Hats, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to safety devices adapted to be secured in the hat of a gentleman.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the cha 'acter mentioned which will be of such construction as to be adapted to be arranged upon the inside of a hat, more precisely upon the sweat-band therein, the same being adapted when the hat is worn to grip or clutch the hair of the wearer thereby preventing said hat from being aocidentally displaced from the head, as by a sudden gust of wind, etc.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which when arranged within a hat will occupy a very small space therein and which, when the hat is worn, will not be noticeable from without.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the class, as stated, which will be adapted to be readily applied to a hat and which will be adapted to efficiently serve a purpose, as stated, therein, the same being of extremely simple construction, hence of low cost to manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
Vith these objects in view my invention consists in a device characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary hat provided with the preferred form of my device, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my device detached, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section thereof taken on the line of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings my invention consists simply in a preferably sheet metal elongate plate 1, of any suitable dimensions, one of the longitudinal edges 2 of which is provided with serrations 3 of any suitable shape and depth. However, the preferred size of my device is about 2; inches in length by inch in width, the serrations 3 cut in the edge 9. thereof being preferably V shaped and -lof an inch in depth. Narrow slots 1 preferably of an inch in depth are cut from the vertex of said serrations as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The teeth 5 formed by said serrations 3 and slots i are off-set slightly from the lower or base portion 6 of the member 1 preferably at an angle of about. degrees, as shown in Fig. 3, for a purpose hereinafter described. Said member is curved, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to conform to the shape of the sweat-band 7 of an ordinary hat, it being secured thereto at the rear portion and close to the lower edge thereof, with the ser 'ated edge upward, preferably by means of wire passing through perforations 8 provided in the portion (3 of the member 1. However, it is understood that any other suitable securing means, such as rivets, sewing, etc., might be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The owner of a hat provided with my device upon placing his hat upon his head draws the rear portion thereof slightly upwardly. By so doing the teeth 5 of the device, because of their being slightly inwardly off-set as before described, are forced into the hair of the wearer, which is clutched and held fast in the narrow slots 1 thereof, thereby obviously holding the wearers hat tightly upon his head and preventing accidental displacement thereof. In removing his hat the wearer simply depresses the rear portion thereof first, thereby disengaging the teeth of the device from the hair of the wearer, whereupon the hat may be removed in the ordinary manner.
Vhile I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my device I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be many changes made in the details of construction thereof, as in the shape of the serrations or the means of securing, etc. without depart.- ing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a member curved to conform to a portion of the inside of a hat, teeth formed along one edge of said member, the serrations between said teeth being V shaped, and there being narrow slots extending downwardly from the vertices of said serrations, and means for securing said member within a hat, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described comprising a rectangular plate member curved so as to conform to the rear portion of the inside of a hat, teeth formed in one of the longitudinal edges of said member, the serrations between said teeth being V shaped, and there being narrow slots downwardly extending from the vertices of said V shaped serra tions, said teeth being slightly obliquely disposed, and means for securing said member 1 upon the sweat-band of a hat substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
