COMBINED HOSE SUPPORTER AND PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '7, 1909.
Application filed October 21, 1908. Serial No. 458,879.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, VANNIE ROBBINS, a citizen of .the United States of America, residing at Meridian, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Hose Supporter and Protector, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined hose supporter and protector.
' As is well known, all hose supporters tend to tear the fabric of the stockings at and adj acent to the mouth hem, no matter how much care be observed in positioning the supporters, and further that the tendency of stockings to tear at the knees, especially where the wearer is stout, is a prolific source of trouble, annoyance and expense, inasmuch as stockings that are otherwise in good condition have to be cast aside as worthless.
The object of the present invention is in a ready and practical manner, and without the direct attachment thereto of supporters,
positively to hold the stockings against working down, and also to prevent the knees from tearing as from strains due to the bending of the knees of the wearer.
With the above and other objects in view,
as will appear-as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts of a combined hose supporter and protector, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, displaying the article as it appears when applied and properly positioned on the leg of the wearer. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 3, and looking in the direction of the arrows thereon. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 andlooking in the direction of the arrows thereon.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates an ordinary stocking and 2 a strap of a hose supporter provided with the usual clasp 3 for engagement with the combined hose supporter and protector. This latter article is constructed from a plurality of plies of stout fabric and its ends are connected by a lapped seam 4*. As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the device is shaped to conform to the knee of the wearer, as indicated at 6, this being necessary as the fabric will not stretch to any appreciable degree and is prevented from doing so by reason ofthe fact that rows of transverse stitches 5 are employed to reinforce the article and which are disposed in parallel spaced relation and extend from near the top to a point below the transverse median line thereof, these being the points where the article will be subjected to the greatest strains.
At the upper end of the device is formed a pocket 9 in which is housed an elastic band 7, and as this ortion of the article will engage the leg of the wearer above'the knee, it is necessary that the band. shouldbe easy to stretch, otherwise painful pressure would result. To permit the pocket to have an extended range of adjustment, to adapt it to fit legs of different sizes, it is gathered for this purpose as shown at Fig. 2. At the lower end of the article is a second pocket 10 in which is housed a relatively broad elastic band 8 which constitutes a garter to hold the stocking from working down, the pocket being also gathered to permit the band to stretch as required.
In order to impart a neat and finished appearance to the article, its ends may if desired be ornamented by ruffles 11.
When the device is applied to the knee over the stocking, the clasp of the garment supporter is connected to the protector only, and in this way the stocking is positively shielded against injury.
The device is of simple construction, and may be readily and cheaply manufactured without the employment of any particular form of machine for the purpose.
I claim:
A combined hose supporter and protector comprising a band of sto'ut fabric shaped to conform to the knee of the wearer and reinforced against stretching by transverse rows of stitches disposed in parallel spaced relation and extending from near the top to a point below the transverse medianline In testimony whereof I afiix my sigma of the artlcle, the band being provlded at ture 1n presence of twowitness'es. each end with a gathered pocket, and elastie bands arranged in the pockets, that at the Q VANNIE ROBBINS 5 lower end ofthe band being of greater wldth VVitns'ses:
- than that at the upper end to constitute the E E. GARNER,
former a garter. N.- L. VVINGO
