. 1 Claim. 1 .(Cl. 128-547) This invention relates to the general art of womens wearing apparel and, more particularly, is for a lightweight maternity panty-girdle.

One object of my present invention is to design a maternity panty-girdle that is made entirely of lightweight material with only up-and-down stretch when in position of use upon the body of the wearer; that will facilitate donning by the wearer; that will preclude the necessity of providing girdles of different lengths, as heretofore; that will remain in position upon the wearers body without danger of riding up out of proper position; that will accommodate itself to the increase in size of the body of the wearer in the region of her abdomen and buttock during the period of pregnancy; and that will afford a sensation of security and comfort in its general abdomen-supporting effect throughout the successive stages of such period.

Another object is to devise a panty-girdle with an abdomen-supporting means that will remain in its in- A tended position in uplifting engagement beneath the wearers abdomen throughout all successive stages of enlargement of this region of her body during the entire period of pregnancy and without being disturbed from such effective position by the vertical expansion or extension of the main body of the girdle in response to the enlargement of her abdominal region.

Another object is to so design a panty-girdle that the front part of the same is free of any garter attachment so as to thereby avoid any downward pressure or pull-upon the abdomen of the wearer as would otherwise be caused by. the tension of thegarters.

Other objects will appear from the following description and claim when considered together with the accompanying drawing.

My present panty-girdle comprises a front part 1 and a rear part 2, both of which are made of light-weight porous ribbed material with only up-and-down stretch when in position of use upon the body of the wearer. These two

1 and 2 are of substantially the same height and are joined together along lines approximately at the top of the rear part 2 is to facilitate donning of the garment as the wearer steps into the same. Garters may be attached at the points G to the lower edge of the rear part 2 near the front thereof and extend angularly forward but without causing any downward pull upon the front part of the girdle, as will be understood. Garters Patented Oct. 11, 1960 2 are also adapted to be attached at the points G to the bottom edge of the part 2 at the rear thereof.

A longitudinally elastic band 5 is attached along ap proximately its middle to the inside of the bottom edge :of the front part land has its ends attached to the seams ibetween the front and

1 and 2; but the upper portion of this band is'otherwise free. A supplemental longitudinally elastic band 6 is attached at only the middle part of its lower edge to the free upper edge of the band 5 andextends in an upwardly curved manner to points .of attachment at the seams between the front and 'rear '

1 and 2 and above the points of attachment of the ends of the band 5. The band 6 is otherwise'free of any attachment. The

5 and 6 are adapted to extend beneath the abdomen of the wearer and to have uplifting engagement therebeneath; and the band 6 will substantially maintain such uplifting engagement beneath the abdomen throughout the entire period of pregnancy even though the front part. 1 may be stretched upwardly in response to the increase in size of the abdomen of the wearer during such period. This is made possible by the fact that the band 6 is substantially free of the front part 1 and hence is accordingly free from upward pull as the front part 1 is stretched upwardly due to the progressive enlargement of the wearers abdomen.

The present garment, in the form herein disclosed, is provided with a crotch part 7 that has its ends attached to the bottom of the front part 1 and the bottom of the rear part 2, respectively, thereby forming leg openings with snug fitting engagement about the thighs of the wearer when in position of use upon her body and thereby further ensuring against the garment riding up out of its intended position upon her body especial-1y when stockings and garters are not worn. The crotch part 7 may be made of any suitable material and, even without any vertical stretch, it will derive the benefit of the up-anddown stretch of the front and

rear parts

1 and 2 so as to ensure comfort without binding engagement of the same at any time in the crotch region of the wearers body. With the inclusion of the crotch part 7, this garment may be recognized as a panty-girdle; and the comparatively less height of the rear part 2, as above described, will serve also to facilitate lowering of the same for personal use, thereby contributing to the function of this garment as a panty as well as a girdle.

wActu-al use of the present form of garment has shownthatit may be easily donned and may be easily pulled on over unusually large hips which characterize the present younger generation and which are still further accentuated, together with the abdominal region, during the period of pregnancy; this garment will not ride up out of the desired position but will remain in proper position upon the wearers body; its up-and-down stretch will permit sufficient yield so as to accommodate itself to the enlargement of the wearers body in the region of her abdomen and buttock during the period of pregnancy, at the same time affording a decided general combined sensation of support, comfort and security; the uplifting engagement of the transverse band beneath the wearers abdomen is not disturbed by the upward stretch of the front part 1 but will remain in substantially fixed abdomen-supporting engagement; the upward stretch of the girdle permits it to serve in lieu of separate girdles of different lengths during the successive stages of pregnancy; the abdomen-supporting means is not subjected to any downward pull by any garters and the abdominal reg-ion of the wearers body is likewise relieved from any such downward movement of the front part 1 thereacross; and the exclusively up-and-down stretch serves to confine the entire region of the wearers enlarged abdomen and buttock to its form and to thereby afford a decidedly improved appearance, while at the same time :ly. adaptem forzuse :byithe .youngerrexpectantzmothers during all seasons ,of :the year including particularly Ethe -summer :season.

What Lelaim is:

A :maternity garment comprising :an :elastic fbOdY-GII- gaging portion adapted'to. extend entirely about the body .of the wearerineluding theregionofher abdomen and buttoek::and.having a front bottom. edge that is adapted -to extend'beneath the wearersabdomen, a longitudinally elastic band attaehed'to. the'bottomsedge of thefront of said body-engaging portion upon the inside thereof, the upper edge of said bandbeing'free, and a second'longi- 'tudinally elastic-band having only the middle part of its lower edgetattached'toxthe free upper edge of said .first- 4 named band and having its ends attached to the sides of said body-engaging portion at a level higher than said lower edge, said second-named band being otherwise free and being adapted for uplifting engagement beneath the abdomen of the wearers body independently of the elasticity of said body-engaging portion.
