EXCLUDER FOR ELASTIC SOCKS.

I'o all. whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Fnnonnic W. 'SAVAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granville, in the county of Washington, State of Sew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Excluders for Elas- .ing of the sock at the ankle, and thus offered a serious obstacle to the insertionof the foot of the wearer into the sock. This objection I have overcome in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and" claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring to Fig. l, the reference numeral 1 denotes a knitted elastic sock of the usual construction, to which is attached at the ankle portion, byone or. more lines of stitching 2, a narrow band 3: of elastic material, preferably a rubber interior with a fabric covering. Attached to the depending free edge of said band 3, by one or more lines of stitching 4, is an excluder 5 which may be formed of any suitable inelastic waterproof material. Said excluder is split at its front and is preferably provided in its meeting edges with a series of eyelets 6, in a manner similar to the eyelets shown in the excluder disclosed in an application filed by me of even date herewith, SerialNo'. 518,804, and for a similar use in connection with the eyeletcdflaps of an overshoe.

By this construction the inelastic excluder 5 not being directly connected. 0 thesock 1 will offer no resistance to a la eral yield of wearer when inserted thereinto, the elastic band 3 yielding readily with the fabric of the sock to permit the passage of the foot.

In Fig. 2 I have shown a slightly modified construction, wherein the strip 3 is dispensed with, and an excluder 7 itself formed of elastic but waterproof material is united to said sock 1 through one or more lines of stitching 8. With this construction the excluder 7 will readily yield laterally with the fabric of the sock to permit the passage of the foot ofthe wearer.

In both of these constructions I prefer to employ a depending tongue 9 united to a strip 10 by one or more lines of stitching 11, which is one or more lines of stitching 12 as shown, though said tongue 9 may be united directly to the sock by the stitching 12.

In the construction shown in Fig. 2 I prefer to shape the excluder 8 wider at its front than at its rear, so that when sewed to position its rear portion will be somewhat lower than its front portion, as shown, whereby the ready 'passage of, the foot of the wearer into and out of the sock will be further aided, as the toe of the foot will pass below the point of junctionbf the excluder with the sock before the heel reaches the same, as will be readily understood.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:

1. @[n combination with an elastic sock, an excluderflattached to the ankle portion of said sock, the portion of the excluder adj ae nt the line of attachment beingelastio to yield laterally with-said sock.

2. The combination with an elastic sock,

and an excluder of water-proof material atin turn united to the sock by tached thereto at the ankle portion, of a band of elastic material forming the means of attachment between said excluder and sock.
