IMPRovEMENT IN coMBtNEoRUBBER sHoEs AND sTocKlNGs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Nor170-,332, dated November 23, 1875; application filed r November 16, 1875.
T0 all whom it may conce/rn,-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. BBBrNs, of Williamsport, Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Water-Proof Coverings for the Feet, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a new article of manufacture, viz., a water-proof shoe and wa- The nature of my invention, and the manner in'which the same is or may be carried into effect, can be best understood by reference-to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a combined shoe and stockingl embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical central section of the same.
The shoe portion of my new article of manufacture is represented at A. It is a vulcanizedrnbber shoe, of ordinary or suit-able construction, with or Without a sunken heel, according as it is to be worn over a leather shoe or boot, or over a stocking merely. With the shoe portion A is combined a stocking portion, B, which extends above the shoe a proper distance, to lit the ankle and leg of the wearer. This stocking portion is under all circumstancesI water-proof, and its exterior surface is preferably formed of a fabric of a suitable color, which imitates, to some extent, in its The material I prefer to employ consists of a thin contin nous sheet of rubber intermediate between outer and inner facings of fabric-as, for instance, knit goods; The stocking may bejoined to the shoe in any suitable manner, as Will be readily understood by manufacturers of rubber goods. v
It will be found advantageous to combine the two in the manner shown in the drawing, where' the stocking is shaped 011 a last, and forms a complete lining for the shoe, which may be either built upon or fitted over and cemented to the stocking.
The water-proof stocking is preferably elastic, which allows it to shape itself better to the leg and ankle.' It may, however, be lnade of non elastic water-proof material, which can be folded or wrapped around the leg, either under or over the pants. In this ,case the stocking, being inelastic, would have to be madelarger, to allow the foot to enter. This, however, may, in part vor in whole, be remedied by putting one or more elastic gores in the stocking above the shoe. lWhether the water-proof material be elastic or inelastic, it should, under all circumstances, be flexible and pliable.
My invention possesses the advantage being applicable to any rubber shoe now in the market. The rubber shoe and stocking thus produced become in effecta water-proof boot having an elastic leg, which will iit the leg of the wearer like a stocking.
Having described my invention, and the manner in which the same is or may be car-f rled 1nto effect, what I claim, and desire to seotherwise ordinary or suitable construction, of
a stocking or .top made of an elastic and water-proof material, whose exterior is formed of knit goods or other suitable fabric, substantially as set forth.'
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 15th day of November, A. D. 1875.
JOHN M. BIBBINs.
