To all who mmay concern:
Be it known that l, EDWIN Ti-ii'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradford, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose- Leaf Qlolders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to loose leafholders or binders for booksgenerally, and its object is to provide a binder capable of easy insertion and removal of the loose leaves or pages, and means for effecting this which will be simpler in construction and cheaper to manufacture than hitherto. These and other objects will be obvious from the fol lowing description, reference being had also to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view representing an embodiment of my invention with the holder in open position; Fig. 2 is an elevation of Fig. 1, showing the loose leaves spaced apart for clearness of illustration and also showing a leaf about to be inserted; and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the attaching members only with parts in section, taken transversely to Fig. 2, and showing the leaf after it has been lowered into position to turn in either direction.
In these drawings, the numeral 1 designates a back of substantially ordinary or any desired form of book having secured to the part 2 thereof the back plate or mem her 3, which may be glued or fastened in any suitable manner to the back. The memher 3 has secured thereon the holding means for the loose leaves, comprising the double substantially hook-shaped members 4 of resilient material having their hooked portions 5 turned inwardly toward each other, or in lieu thereof the inner ends knobbed and held with their inner ends in yielding contact. The said contacting inner ends are preferably rounded, as indicated at 4, thus forming substantially ii-shaped or knobbed shaped guiding notches which facilitate the insertion and removal of the leaves, the rounding being conveniently effected by doubling or bending the members back upon them selves, or forming them with knobbed ends, as shown. I also provide guiding members 6 on the member 3 to act as guides when inserting or removing the sheets 7, and also to hold the sheets substantially firm when in writing position, which members may comprise inverted o -shaped bars with their Specification of Letters Patent. fatiggptggg Iafgw, 3612;,

ends or arms secured to the member or back plate Iihe back plate is preferably made of sheet metal, and the members i and 6 secured thereto by having angular turned ends which are engaged by integral prongs struck from the plate 3, or otherwise. 7
.ln Fig. 3 the leaf 7 is shown in dotted lines in proper relation to the attaching members to be turned forward or backward, or to be removed, as desired. It has near one edge eyes 8 of suitable shape to engage the hooks a and also notches 9 which fit snugly around the parts (3 to accomplish the results stated above.
'io ins or remove a leaf or leaves, it is only necessary to bring the same into a plane at right angles to the back plate, and substantially centrally of the hooked-shaped members 4. Thus by a vertical movement of the leaf or leaves, the same is guided by the rounded projections between the abutting ends which separate on thv application of a slight amount of force sutficiently to permit the passage of the leaf or leaves.
What- I claim is 1. In combination with a suitable cover, means for detachably securing loose leaves therein, with means for guiding the leaves laterally and vertically when inserting or removing the same, and means for holding the leaves firm when in writing position, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a suitable cover, double-hooked members having their ends in yielding contact for the insertion or removal of loose leaf members, with means for guiding said leaves during said operations, substantially as described.
3. In combination a back plate, resilient members carried thereby and having inwardly turned rounded ends yieldinglyheld in contact, and leaves having eyes engaged by said members, substantially as described.
In combination a back plate, resilient members carried thereby having inwardly turned abutting ends, guide members carried by the back, and leaves having eyes for engaging the resilient members and notches for receiving the guide members, substantially as described.
5. In combination a back plate, retaining members carried thereby having ends turned inwardly toward each other, spacing mem bers between said retaining members, and
leaves having eyes to be engaged by said retaining members and notched edges to receive the guiding members, substantially as described.
6. In combination, a back plate, a plurality of pairs of retaining members carried thereby, the members of each pair being extended inward toward each other and having their ends inclined to provide substan- 10 tially V shaped entrancesbetween said ends and a plurality of sheets havingeyes for en gaging said members, substantially as describe In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
