UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. HOYT, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO J". A. FOLGER & 00., OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM H. HoY'r, citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Containing-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in containing cans.
It consists in the combination of a main and a supplemental combination top, simultaneously applied to the can, and in details which will be more fully explained by ref erence to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a section of a portion of the can. Fig. 2 is a broken away plan view.
My invention is applicable to that class of cans having a permanently attached top and bottom; the top having a centrally flanged opening to receive a cover which has a frictional lit in the opening, and which can be removed to expose the interior at any time.
In my invention I combine a compound sealing film with the main portion of the rigid top of the can, and the two are simultaneously united with the body of the can so that this thin double seal extends across beneath the open space in the top, and is normally protected by the cover fitting into the opening; and when the cover is removed, the thin seal still protects the contents until such time as it is desired to have access thereto, when it may be cutout. .Such a can is shown at A, and may be cylindrical, rectangular, or any other desired form.
2 is the top of the can having a centrally flanged opening, and it may have an-annular surrounding channel between the opening and the periphery.
3 is a cover for said opening, adapted to fit and form a closure for the opening. This cover may have a horizontally projecting flange around its periphery by which it may be lifted when it is desired to open the can,
in the usual manner.
In order to form a supplemental seal, I
employ a sheet of thin material 4, such as lead, and a corresponding reinforcing sheet Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed November 16, 1908.
any other usual or suitable manner.

5. This reinforcing sheet may be of any suitable material. I. have found that a tough quality of paper is very satisfactory. ThisJcompound sheet may correspond in diameter with the top 2, and may be double seamed therewith upon the can, or secured in The supplemental top thus has its periphery folded, or seamed, as it is termed, upon the can, thence extending inward across the bottom of the depressed annular channel of the top, or such other contact surface as may be formed in lieu thereof.
The cover 3 is fixed in the opening in the top so that its lower surface is substantially level with the inner surfaceof the top 2, and the thin or compound top extending across in contact with both, is properly supported against undue pressure or injury.
When desired the can is opened in the usual manner of opening such cans, by the use of an implement which will engage the edge of the cap 3, which may thus be lifted out of the opening in the can top leaving the interior sealing film exposed, but the can still remains hermetically closed until such time as it is opened by cutting out or destroying the seal. 4
By the use of this compound film, I have the advantage of the impermeability of one part, and the toughness of the other to guard against rupture when it is united to the can to Ilaving' thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is V 1. The combination with the containing can, of a top having a central opening and cover therefor, an interior continuous film composed of a ductile sheet and a reinforcement therefor, said film registering with the cover opening, and means to secure the periphery of the film to the can top, said means including the extension and double seam of the film and can top simultaneously upon the j can.
2. The combination with a can, a top therefor having a central opening, and a cover adapted to close said opening, of a edges of the top nd of the sealing sheet becontinuous sealing sheet composed of a ducmy hand in presence of two subscribing wittile metal and reinforcement therefor, the nesses.
ing extended beyond the sides of the can and WILLIAM O double-seamed together and to a correspond- Witnesses:
ing portion of the upper edge of the can. E. R. FOLGER, In testimony whereof I have hereuntoset I; R. R. VAIL.
