Our invention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown or described.

- The can-body A is preferably provided with an outwardly-projecting seaming-flange a at its bottom or filling end, adapted to be folded into a double, rolled, or other seam a with the seaming-flange c of the bottom head C after the can is filled. The removable-cover-receiving head B of the can is preferably countersunk or furnished with a depending flange 5', thus formbody and a raised shoulder or rim 6 at the upper end of the can-body when the head B is seamed to the body. The'removable-coverreceiving head B is further preferably provided with a depending cover-seat wall or flange 7), adapted to tightly engage the corresponding wall or flange (Z of the removable cover D and form a tight and secure joint therewith. The frangible protective paper, parchment, or other thin material seal F may be permanently secured to the head B over the opening B therein by any suitable means. 'e prefer, however, to so secure the frangible seal F to the head B by means of a sheetmetal connecting-ring'G, snugly fitting and surrounding the friction-seat wall or flange 7) of the friction-top B and having a horizont-al inwardly projecting flange g furnished with folds or flanges g gi'between which the edge or rim of the frangible seal F is clamped. In the modification illustrated in Fig. 7 the frangible seal F is permanently attached to the head B by means of connecting-ring G, having a single flange 1, between which and the lower edge of the flange b of the top or i head B the frangible seal F is clamped. The I ring G in both constructions is forcibly pressed upon and surrounds the depending flange or 5 wall 6 of the removable-cover-receiving head The removable cover D is preferably furnished, in addition to the depending wall or flange (I, with a horizontally-projecting rim 7', having a fold d at its outer edge to be readily pried off by any suitable lever or tool over the shoulder 6 at the top edge of g the can as fulcrum, thus enabling the can to be easily opened.

The frangible seal F is preferably made of paper or parchment-paper and may have printed or stamped thereon any suitable trademark or name indicating the manufacture or origin of the goods contained in the can.

The can as manufactured at the'can-factory has the head B, with the frangible seal F firmly attached thereto, permanently seamed to the can-body and also the removable cover 1 D securely seated in the head B, thus securely l protecting the frangible seal F from mutilation or injury. After the can is filled the bottom head (3 is likewise seamed to the can-- body. The filled can now cannot be opened or its contents used without first removing the removable cover D in the usual manner and then destroying the frangible protective l and goods-identifying seal F; nor can the can F be again refilled with spurious articles and 1 again used, as another frangible seal F cannot be applied to the head B after said head B has once been seamed to the can-body.

\Ve claim- 1. In acan or vessel, the combination with a body and a removable cover-receiving head secured to the body. a removable cover closing the opening in said head, a connectingring secured to said head, and a frangible protective seal secured to said head inside the same by said connecting-ring, substantially as specified.

2. In a can or vessel, the combination with a body and a removable cover-receiving head secured to the body, a removable cover 0105'- ing the opening in said head, a connectingring secured to said head, a frangible protective seal secured tosaid connecting-ring inside said, cover and head, substantially as specified. I 3. In a can or vessel, the combination with a body and a removable cover-receiving head secured to the body, a removable cover closing the opening'in said head, a frangible protective seal and a connecting-ring secured to said head and having clamping-flanges embracing said frangible protective seal, substantially as specified.

4. A can or vessel-having a sheet-metal friction-head provided with a removable coverengaging wall, a removable friction-cover closing the opening in said friction-head, and

a frangible seal secured to said head, a con necting-ring secured to said head inside the same inside said friction-cover by said conmeeting-ring, substantially as specified.

5. A can or vessel having a sheet-metal friction-head provided with a removable coverengaging wall, a removable friction-cover closing the opening in said head inside said friction-cover, a frangible seal insidesaid cover and a connecting-ring having flanges between which said seal is clamped, substantially as specified.

6. A can or vessel having a sheet-metal friction-head provided with a removable coverengaging wall, a removable friction -cover closing the opening in said head, a frangible seal inside said friction-cover and protected thereby, and a connecting-ring secured to said friction-head and to which said seal is secured, substantially as specified.

' 7 A can or vessel having a sheet-metal fric-- tion-head provided with a friction-seat wall,

; a removable friction-cover closing the opening in said head, a paper seal inside said friction-cover, and a connecting-ring fitting and surrounding said friction-seatwall or flange ofthe head to which ring said paper seal is secured, substantially as specified.

It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 799,S20,-granted September 19, 1905,

upon the application of John M. Young and Clarence M. Symonds, of San Francisco, California, for an improvement in Sheet-Metal Cans, an error appears in the printed specification requiring correction, as follows; On page 2,1ine 98, after the word head the clause a connecting-ring secured to said head inside the same should be stricken out and inserted after the word friction-head, in line 97, same page; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofiice.
