The invention relates particularly to a metal container of the friction closure type having a frangible sealing member used in conjunction therewith. The container comprises a body portion of metal having ends double seamed thereto. The body wall of the container is beaded inwardly and the inwardly projecting bead is shaped so as to form a seating ledge against which a frangible sealing disk may be clamped. Thisjseating ledge is disposed a slight distance below the double seam join- ;"ng the container top to the body of the container. The container top is provided with an opening which is surrounded by a vertical friction wall adapted to receive a friction plug closure. The container top adjacent the opening is shaped so as to provide a rounded shoulder, and between said rounded shoulder and the seam joining the container top to the body of the container is a pocket for a sealing material. A frangible sealing disk extends across the opening and contacts with the rounded shoulder and terminates in said pocket. The seating ledge and the pocket in the container top are so disposed and dimensioned that when the container top is placed on the container body preparatory to seaming the same thereto, the peripheral edge by a vertical friction wall].

Referring more in detail to the drawing, the
container includes a body portion 1 to which a 5 lower end 2 is secured by a double seam 3. The container top 4 is secured to the upper end of the body wall i by a double seam 5. The body wall of the container is bent inwardly to form a bead which is brought together and slightly bent upward at the inner edge so as to provide a seating ledge indicated at 6 in the drawing.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the container top 4 is provided with a central opening surrounded Said vertical friction wall-is rolled outwardly into a hollow bead B at its upper end. This container top is formed from a single blank of metal which is drawn to give the desired shape to said top. Adjacent the lower edge portion of the vertical friction wall there is a rounded shoulder 9. Between this rounded shoulder 9 and the double seam 5, the container top curves upwardly at- H3, and is thus shaped to provide a pocket for a sealing material Extending across the opening at the lower end of the vertical friction wall I is a frangible sealing disk 52, preferably of aluminum. This sealing disk may be made, however, of taggers tin, paper, or any other material which may be read ily ruptured. The sealing disk is dimensioned so that it rests against the rounded shoulder 9 and extends into and terminates in the pocket containing the sealing material H. The seating ledge Band the container top are shaped and dimensioned so that when the container top is placed on the container body preparatory to the seaming of the same to the container body, the peripheral edge portion of the sealing disk will be clamped between the container top and the seating ledge 6, and firmly pressed against the sealing material H inthe pocket. This forms a very firm securing means for the frangible sealing disk and also an hermetic or airtight joint between thesealing disk and the container top.
The friction plug closure 93 isprovided, which closure has a verticalfrictionwail [4 adapted to engage the vertical friction wall 7 on the container top. At the upper edge of the closure l3 frangible sealing disk is laid across the opening contacting with the rounded shoulder, and
the container top and-sealing-disk are then at- 1 tached to the container body and the double seam formed for joining the container top to the container body. This is all done by the manufacturer of the container. The packer, before the container end 2 forming the bottom is'attached thereto, inverts the container and places in the container the product which is to be packed therein, after which the container end 2 is secured to the container body by double seaming. 'The friction closure plug is inserted by the manufacturer and serves to protect the frangible sealing, disk. When it is desired to open the container, the friction closure is removed and a sharp instrument is used for rupturing the disk at the inner edge of the rounded shoulder 9. The friction closure can be reinserted for closing the container after the ruptured. portion of the sealing disk is removed. If
' the customer finds the sealing disk ruptured when indicated .at 2 l,
the package is purchased, it is an indication that the container hasbeen opened and the contents tampered therewith. Not only is the sealing disk used for preventing tampering with the contents of the container, but it also forms an airtight seal for the container which is dificult to obtain between the two friction walls of the friction closure and the container top.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing, there shown a slightly modified form of container top. linthis form of the invention, the container top 4 is :provided with a vertical friction wall I! which is spaced close to the body wall of the container.
The body wall I of the container is shaped to form the seating ledge 6 such as described in connection with the container shown in Figures 1 and 2. The container top has an opening is which is spaced away from the wall 11, and the metal of the container top is folded back underneath the container top, as'indicated at I9. This provides a rounded shoulder 20. Between theopening I8 and the vertical friction wall I! the container top is curved upwardly as This provides a pocket for a sealing material 2-2. Extending across the opening I8 is a frangible sealing disk 23 which contacts with the rounded-shoulder 2E! and extends into the pocket so that the peripheral edge portion of the frangible sealing disk may be brought into engagement with the sealing material 22.
The container top and the seating ledge are shaped and dimensioned so that when the container top is in place for securing by the double seam to the container body, the frangible sealing disk will be drawn tight against the rounded shoulder and clamped firmly between the seating ledge .and the sealing material 22 in the pocket. The frangible sealing disk will also be clamped between the folded back portion of the metal of the container top and the inner edge of the seating ledge. This provides a very firm clamping for the frangible sealing disk and also a holding means which forms an airtight seal between the disk and the container top. An outer friction closure 24 is provided, which clossure has a vertical frictionwall 25 adapted to contact with the verticalv friction wall 11; Said closure 24 is rolled outwardly to form a hollow bead 26 which is adapted to contact with the extreme upper portion of the double seam 5. It will be noted that the wall I! of the container top is spaced away from the wall lof the body of the container so that it may yield to receive the friction closure 24. When it is desired to open the container, the friction closure'24 may be pried out andthe frangible sealing disk readily ruptured at the inner edge of the rounded shoulder 20.
'From the above it will be apparent that a "metal container has been provided wherein the frangible sealing disk is secured by a shaping of the body wall and the container top which is independent of the double seam, so that the attachment of the sealing disk to the body wall does not, in any way, interfere with the formation of the double seam.
It is obvious that many changes may be made in the details of construction without departingfrom the spirit :of the invention as set .forth in'the appended claims.
