GUN-SUPPORT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES O. LAWSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middleton, in the county of Canyon and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Supports,

of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a gun support and has for its object to provide a device of this kind which may be readily applied to the body of a person and form or provide a support or rest for the left arm while firing a gun in order that the gun may be held more steadily and fired with a greater degree of accuracy.

A further object of the invention is to provide a gun support which may be readily adjusted to different persons and which may be also adjusted to support the arm at dif ferent elevations.

Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view on an enlarged scale of the support detached from position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bracket supporting plate and bracket. Fig. 4 is a plan view partly in section of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section, taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

In the embodimentillustrated the device comprises a supporting plate 1 which is stamped from a single piece of metal and is curved longitudinally as shown more particularly in Fig. 2 to fit the body. This plate comprises a body portion 2 provided at its upper and lower edges with longitudinal tongues or portions 3 and 4 respectively, the outer terminals of which are provided with outwardly bent hook portions 5. The supporting plate is secured to the body at a point immediately beneath the junction of the left shoulder therewith by upper and lower straps 6 and 7, respectively, each consisting of two corresponding sections 8 and 9 provided at their outer ends with links 10 which are connected with the hook portions 5 of the supporting plate when the latter is secured in position. nected together at or near the right side of the person by the elastic sections 12. A shoulder strap 13 is connected at one end to the section 9 of the upper strap 6 and is provided at its free or disconnected end with a link 15 which is adapted to be engaged with a connecting hook 16 secured to the other section of said strap. This shoulder strap provides an additional means for securing the device in position and holds the supporting plate against slipping downward.

The arm rest or support 17 comprises an inner section 18 which is pivoted at its inner end by a bolt 19 to the body of the supporting plate in position to swing in an approximately horizontal plane. An outer tubular section 20 is screwed to the outer threaded end 21 of section 18 and mounted for longitudinal adjustment in said tubular section is an adjustable supporting rod 22 provided at its inner end with an enlargement 23 which forms astop to limit outward adjustment thereof. A support or rest 24 is screwed or otherwise attached to the outer end of said supporting rod and is shaped to receive the arm at a point just above the elbow. The outer ends of said support or rest 24 are provided with downwardly bent hooks 25 which receive the links 26 of an adjustable strap 27 which encircles the arm just above the elbow.

The section 18 of the support or rest is provided with a lateral pin or extension 28 which is adapted to be engaged with any one of a series of spaced transverse apertures 29 formed in the body of the supporting member and lying in the are of a circle whereby the support or rest may be adjusted to different elevations to suit the requirements of the user. From the foregoing description it will be seen that my improved support may be readily adjusted to different persons and is a great aid in securing steadiness and accuracy in firing. It is to be further observed that when the device is applied to the body of the user the coat may be readily slipped on over said device without any discomfort to the user under which conditions the device will be invisible.

While I have described and illustrated the device as a support or rest for the left arm,

it is to be understood that the device may be so constructed and arranged as to adapt as a support or rest for the right arm, meet the requirements of a person when lefthanded.

From the foregoing description, taken'fin connection with the drawings, it is tl' glib that the construction and operatiodevice will be readily' -understood requiring a more extended explanation;

Various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction maybe resorted to withoutdeparting from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new, is: 7 I.

1. In a device of the class described, a supporting plate formed to fit the body at a point just below the shoulder, and provided at opposite endswith hook portions, upper and lower body straps'to-h'old said plate in position, thcformer having. links to engage the hook portions of the latter, and a longitudinally adj ustable' arm rest'or support pivoted to the supporting plate in position to swing toward and from the same.

2. In a device of the class described, a supporting plate formed to fit the body at a point just below the shoulder and provided at opposite ends with hook portions, upper, and lower body straps to hold said plate in position, the former having links to engage the hook portions of the latter and a longitudinally adjustable armrest or support pivoted to the supporting plate in position to swing toward and from the same with means for holding the arm rest at different elevations. A device of the class described comprising a supporting plate formed to fit the body at a point just below the shoulder and provided at opposite ends with outwardly bent hook portions, upper and lower body'straps to secure the supporting plate to the body, each of said straps comprising front and Iback sections provided with links to engage the hook portions of the supporting plate, buckles for adjusting the strap sections, a connecting hook secured to the free end of the front section of the upper strap, a shoul 'der strap secured at one end to the back sec 'tion of the upper strap and provided at its free end with a link-to receive said connecting hook and an adjustable arm rest or support pivoted to the supporting plate.

14. In a device of the class described, a supporting plate in position to swing toward point just below the shoulder, an arm rest comprising an inner section pivoted to the supporting plate in position to swing toward and from the same, an intermediate tubular section screwed on the outer end of said inner section, a supporting rod mounted for longitudinal adjustment in said tubular section," an arm rest or support connected to the outer end of said rod and means formed in thesupporting plate and on said inner pivoted section for holding the arm rest at different elevations.

5.-In-a device of the class described, a supporting plate formed with an arcuate series of spaced apertures, means for attaching said plate to the body at a point just be low the shoulder, an arm rest or support comprising an inner section having a downwardly bent intermediate portion pivoted to the supporting plate and adapted to swing toward and from the latter, an extensible supporting rod connected with said inner section, an arm rest connected to the outer end ofsaid rod and a lateral pin formed at the downwardly bent portion of the inner section and adapted to enter any one of the series of apertures formed in said support ing plate whereby the arm rest or support may be held at different elevations.
