HUGH ANDREW TIERNEY, OF NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 JOHN J. EGAN, .OF NEWPORT, RI-IODE ISLAND.
'SHU'ITER-RELEASING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH A. TIERNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Newport, State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Releasing Devices, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for releasing the catch for holding the shutter open and has for an object to provide a device by which the fastener can be readily operated without requiring the operator to lean out of the window.
A further object of the invention, is to provide a shutter or releasing device which may be readily adjusted and applied to shutters equipped with the common devices for holding the same open.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention; Figure 1 is a plan view showing my device applied to a shutter. Fig. 2 is a section through the device and the shutter,
showing in dotted lines, the fastener released. Fig. 3 is a sectional View through the releasing device showing the parts in an adjusted position.
In the drawings, the shutter 1 is of the usual construction and is provided with a fastening hook 2, which extends through the shutter and is pivotally secured to the shutter in any desired way. This fastening hook is adapted to engage a keeper 3, secured to the building and when the hook is engaged with the keeper, the shutter will be held open. These parts are of the usual construction, and will not need further description.
My improved shutter releasing device consists of a plate 4, which is provided with openings 5 at its ends, through which said plate is secured to the shutter at the lower edge thereof by suitable screws. Said plate 4, is provided with spaced tubular bearings 6, 6, in which slides a sleeve 7. A feeding piece 8 is threaded into one end of the sleeve 7, and is offset therefrom so that said feeding piece may be readily grasped and the sleeve 7 moved back and forth in the tubular bearings 6.
A rod 9 extends into the sleeve 7 and is adjustably secured therein by a thumb screw 10. By loosening the thumb screw 10, the rod 9 may be adjusted to any desired position, after which the thumb screw 10 is turned to grip the rod, and hold the sleeve and rod in their adjusted positions.
The rod 9 as herein shown, is provided with a hook 11. The hook 11 is adapted to engage the fastener 2 on the shutter. In placing my shutter releasing device upon a shutter, the plate 4: is secured in place and may be located without any special reference to the fastening hook 2. The screw 10 is released and the rod 9 adjusted so that the hook 11 will engage the hook 2 for fastening the shutter open. The sleeve 7 is preferably moved so that the feeding piece 8 is in contact with the tubular bearings 6. The thumb screw 10 is now tightened, thus locking the sleeve and rod together.
When it is desired to release the catch or hook 2, the thumb piece 8 is grasped and the sleeve and rod are moved into tubular bearings 6, and the hook 11 will swing the fastener or hook 2 so as to release the same from the keeper on the building. The shutter may now be readily swung about its hinge and closed.
Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A shutter releasing device consisting of a supporting member adapted to be attached to the shutter, a'releasing member slidingly secured to said supporting member, said releasing member including adjustable sections and means for holding said sections in adjusted positions.
2. A shutter releasing device consisting of a supporting plate, spaced bearings carried by said supporting plate, a releasing member sliding in said bearings, said releasing member having a thumb piece at one end and a hook at the other end adapted to engage the catch or hook of the shutter said releasing member also including adjustable sections and means for holding the said sections in adjusted position.
3. A shutter releasing device consisting of a supporting plate adapted to be attached to the shutter, spaced supporting bearings carried by said plate, a sleeve sliding in said "I a supporting plate adapted to be secured to a hook formed on the end of said rod and 10 adapted to engage the hook on the shutter for releasing the same.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.

bearings, a rod adjustably secured in said sleeve, and a hook carried by said'rod and adapted to engage a hook on the shutter.
4. A shutter releasing device consisting of the shutter, spaced bearings carried by the supporting plate, a sleeve sliding in said bearings, a thumb piece secured to said sleeve, :1 rod adjustably secured in said sleeve, and
