PACKING AND DISPLAY CASE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
lle it known that I, FRANK S. FERRY, a
citizen ofthe United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful .Packing and Dis lay Case, of which the following is a speci cation.
My invention consists of a case of that class adapted to ack bottles or other receptacles and provided with a top and a flap or member which may be placed in a position to uncover said receptaclesY and have matter of information thereon as to goods involved in said receptacles, the same being readily presented to view, and so directing attention to the goods which are thus displayed in the receptacles to the best advantage.
For the purpose of explaining the invention, the accompanying drawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction of the same to practice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box or case in operative condition embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the same in closed condition, with the lid separated from the body. Fig.
3 represents a bottomplan viewy thereof.
Fig. 4 represents a plan view, on a reduced scale, of the body in opened-out condition.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings A designates box or case comprising a body composed of the front member B, back member C, side member D, bottom members E, top and lid member F, the closing and display member G', and the attaching member H, the latter being secured to the adjacent side member D by gumming or other suitable means. The members D, B, C are laterall continuous ofeach other and of the back on one side of the latter. The member H is laterally continuous of the other side of said back. @ne of the bottom members E joins the lower end of the back member C. The other bottom member joins the lower end of the front member B, said members E, being provided respectively with tongues J and slits K, which latter receives the former and so lock said members, thereby closing the bottom of the case. The front member B has its upper edge lower than the up er edges of the side members D and back C,}by which provision the front of the body of the case is cut-away below the upper portions of the f' bodies of bottles, etc. occupying the body of the case, thus displaying, in a measure, the contents of saidl bottles, etc. rIhe upper edges of the sides D, at the front thereof, f
are chamfered or sloping downwardly as at L, so as to cut-away the front of the sides of the case forming spaces thereat, whereby the upper portions of the bottles, etc. in the body of the case may be seen through said spaces, and so said bottles, etc. may be displayed to that extent, especially when the box is opened.
When the case is closed, the member F covers the tops of the bottles, etc. in thel body, and the member G depends from said member F and hangs over the upper end of the front member B as a continuity thereof, thus closing the front of the case and covering the bottles, etc., when the lid M may be applied, so as to cover preferably only the upper portion of the body of the case, but 4surround' the member Gr and guard it from openm v Speelal attention is directed to the fact that when the contents of the case are t-o be displayed, the end is removed and the members F, G are removed. -The member G is then folded downwardly and tucked behind a row of the bottles, etc., thus displaying the bottles, etc. in front of said member G, while the member F is somewhat elevated and serves to hold the member G in a position to present advertising and information matter on the exposed face of the latter to the notice of the public, as will be apparent in Fig. 1. At the places of junction of adjacent members are score lines, which act as hinges, permitting the case to be set up, and if desired, to be folded flat after the order of a knockdown paper or pasteboard box, of which material the case is made. Attention is also directed to the fact that when the lid M is applied to the bod of the case, and controls the members E?, G, as has been stated, thecase is held in compact form and the goods placed in pockets in the body are securely packed therein, and so retained in serviceable condition for transportationwithout the necessity of employing saw-dust, excelsior, etc. therein, the device'thus prellO senting a practical shi ping-packer, as well as po'ssessm the disp ay features-hereinbefore referre to.
p Having thus described my invention, what opened, and as a closure for the portion of, the box above its cutaway front when in its closed position.l
2. A case of the character stated, comprising in a single integral element a box havin a bottom, a back, sides and a front of less height than said sides and a top comprising two members movably united, the one ada tl ed to form the top and the other engagea le between said sides and within'the-box and bearing against said front tolform the complement of the front of the box.
3. A case of the character stated, comprising in a single integral element a box havin a bottom, a back, sides and a front of less height than said sides and a top comprising two members movably united, the one adapted to form the top and the other en ageable between said sides and within the ox and bearing against said front to form the complement of the front of the box, said top member serving as a brace for the front member of the cover when the latter is in its vertical position on the top of the box to display the contents of the latter and serve as a dls lay member for advertising matter.
4. A lank for a box of the character described comprising in a single element 'a front member of less width than the height of the box and having a bottom member at one side thereof and a member at one end thereof at right angles thereto, a corresponding member at the opposite end the said bottom member being conned within the area of said end members, a back member with an attaching member at one end, a bottom member upon one side, closing and display members upon the opposite side.
5. A blank for a box of the character described comprising in a single element a front member of less width than the height of the box and having a bottom member at one side thereof and a member at one end thereof at right angles thereto, a corresponding member at the opposite end the said bottom member being conned within the area cel of said end members, a back member with an attaching member at one end, a bottom member upon one side, closing and display members upon the opposite side, the said bottom members having interlocking p01'- tions.
6. A blank for a box of the character described comprisin in a single element a front member havlng a4 bot-tom member at one side thereof and a member at one end the said bottom member being confined within the area of said end members thereof at right angles thereto, a corresponding memi ber at the opposite end, a back member with an attaching member at one end, a b ottom Y member upon one side, lclosing and dls lay
