[M E/vm/e m7 WITNESS A homey UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS GRAHAM, OF HAZEL DELL, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO H. E. WARFEL AND ONE-THIRD TO DAYTON E. BOWERS, OF HIDALGO, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY-CLIP FOR SWINGLETREES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hazel Dell, in the county of Cumberland and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Clips for Swingletrees; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety clip devices for swingle trees and comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrange ments of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing the clip as applied to a swingle tree. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the clip removed from the swingle tree, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the clamping member removed.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a swingle tree and B is a clip forming a housing made preferably of the shape shown in the drawings having two oppositely disposed laterally extending flanges bent each upon itself to form resilient arms I) which are adapted to spring over the swingle tree in the manner shown clearly in Fig. 1. Said arms are provided with apertures I) for the reception of a rivet or other fastening means F designed to be passed through apertures in the swingle tree. A portion of said clip is upwardly bent as shown and forms a hous- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing to the walls of which are pivotally connected a clamping member E which has angled ends E mounted upon the pivots H. passing through the walls of the clip. The coiled springs N are bent one about each pivot of said clamping member, one end being bent about the end of the clamping member while the other end of the spring bears against the clip as shown and serves to normally hold the clamping member at its farthest throw toward the swingle tree. In practice a trace is adapted to be passed through the clip and held securely by the clamp and whifile tree.
By the provision of a device as shown and described a simple and efficient apparatus is afforded whereby a trace or tug may be adjusted and securely held in such adjusted. position and, when it is desired to release the same from the clip and swingle tree, the clamping member is merely swung upon its pivot to allow the same to be readily detached therefrom.
hat I claim to be new is In combination with a swingle tree, a safety clip, comprising a housing open on two of its opposite sides and through which a trace strap is adapted to pass, the opposite closed sides of said housing each having laterally extending flanges which are bent upon themselves to form resilient clips designed to engage over the edge of a whitlie tree, and a clamping member pivotally mounted at its ends to the opposite walls of the housing and adapted to bear against a trace strap held intermediate the same and the whiflie tree, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ELIAS GRAHAM. lVitnesses lVALDo VICKREY, J. D. FINNEY.
