Description

@sind ,gatuite @1s-tent ifi-re. f
Letters Patent No.V 93,960, dated .August 24, 1869.
IMEROVEQ WINDOWfBEAD FASTENING.
The Schedule referred to in the'e Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all -whom. t may concern Be it knownv that I, GEORGE F. BROWN, ofv Winchendon, in the county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts,. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in av Clasp for Securing the Slip or inside Bead to Adjust andHold Windows in their Gasings; and the following is aiull, clear, and exact de-l scription of the same, reference being had to the* accompanying drawings, making a part of this speciication, in which- Figure 1 represents a window-frame sash and the inside casing, with a small section broken out to show the manner of inserting the tube, spring-catch, and notched thumb-bolt, to hold the inside head in its place.
Figure 2 shows two detached'views, side and edge, of the tube-socket, spring'catch, and thumb-bolt.
The object of my invention is-.to providea new article of manufacture and use, -for securing the inside bead to window-casings, also for cabinet and' showcases, so that they are more. secureLin their places, can be easily taken out for cleaning, glazing, painting, &c., and replaced, Without requiring any instrument or damaging the paint or casing. Y
My invention consistsA in av bolt or pin, provided with a milled or thumb-screw head, anda series of notches in one side of the pin, into which a spring-catch, attached toa short tube or socket, wil' enter, the bead being secured by the-pin passing through itinto the tube, which is let into the window-frame by turning the pin so that the notches willreceive tliespringcatch.
To enable others to make andl use my intention, I
willdesclibelit more in detail, referring to theY drawings, and to the letters marked thereon.
I make the socket A of small-size brass tubing, out to suitable length, oneinch, more or less'r Near, and across one end I make a narrow opening, a, to admit the catch B through tothe notches e ve e, in the pin C, the spring-catch being made of hardrolled brass, one end bent at a right angle, the other secured to the outside of the rear end of the tube A.
The bolt or pin C maybe made of cast or wroughtluetal, smooth, to t nicely into the tube-socket A,
with a series of notches, e e amade ata"suitable distance from the shoulder. of the head D, to accommodate the different thicknesses of bead-strips E, sc that someone of the notches will be sure to take in the spring-catch B 'when the pin O is pushed into the shoulder,and turned so as to match.
The iixtures or fastenings are very easily tted and putin. The process is simply tomake round holes, the size ofthe pin, in the bead-strips where you Want' them. Place them, and mark for the tubes A onthe frameG; then, with a bit of the rightsize, bore vinto the ame. the depth ofthe length of the tube, and, with a narrow flat gouge orA chisel, cut out, on the upper side of the hole, room for the spring-catch Byte l work in, and drive the tube in ush with the face of the frame, put thebead in place, push -in the pins G C,.turn 4`them till the catch takes hold of one of the notches, and all is complete. l
To take out`tl1`e sash, you have only to turn the pin One-fourth round, either way,'andthe bead-stick is loosef-to takeoff.
"The utility of my invention, for a new article of buildv ing-hardware, will vreadily be seen; the cost is triding;
' they can be fitted and put in nearly as quick as screws,
and, when once in, they are permanent, and hold the ,Y bead and window firmly; and when a window is'to be taken out for any purpose, it requires no tool or'implement of any kind but the thum-hand nger, no nails tobe drawn, nor any danger of Amarring the paint or casing.
' What I claim as'my invention, and desire to secure-r by Letters Patent, -is- The tube -or socket A, provided with a spring-catch.- B, in combination with the pin C, having a Series of -notches, e e e, and a thumb-screw head, D, all 'con-.r -structed to be' applied and operate. substantially in Y the manner-herein described, for the purposes set orth.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name,
in the ,presence of GEO. F. BROWN. Witnesses:
Grens H. WHITNEY, O. llfusoocn.v
