Description

WILLIAM H.
Stimmt Wee ANDREWS, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR -TO BURTON M ALLORY, OFSAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 88,113, dated Mfr/rch 23,1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-KEYS.
To all whom fit may concern Beit known that I, WILLLIM H. ANDREWS, of New Haven, in the county of N ew Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Door- Keys; and I do `hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings,
andthe lettersof reference marked thereon, to be a of the key when it is removed from the lock, for the convenience ofthe person carrying the key ;l and 'Ihejn'vention consists in forming the bit upon the shank, or spindle, i'n the usual manner, the said spindle being about half the usual length, and into the back of 'the said spindle I cut a groove longitudinally, and into the outer end of thegrooveI pivot a handle, formed from metal, so as to turn over and set into the groove cut in the back. This handleJ turned from the groove outward, extends'the key-t the length required, and,
when closed, contracts the key, so 'as to reduce it to about half its usual length.
In order to the clear understanding of my invention, I will fully describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the bit of the key, fixed', 0r formed upon a spindie, B, in the usual manner, the said spindle being about half the usual length. I then groove the spindle upon its back, as seen in fig. 2, to about the depth denoted by the'broken line in fig. 3.
Into the outer end of this groove I hinge, or pivot an extension, C, the said extension being of suchform that it will fold into the back of the spindle, as seen in figs. lv and 2, and so as to be easily turned therefrom, to extend the key, as seen in iig. 3.
In its contracted state it becomes a little larger than the common doorfkey; but extended, it' is of the usual length of keys of this class.
I do not broadly claim a key constructed so as to fold within a case, orhandle, as such, I'amaware, is not new, and may be ifound in the drawings in the patent of T. A. Anberlin,J April 17, 1866.
Having fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and useful, 'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A door-key, consisting of the bit A, and'spindle B, hinged thereto, the said spindle being grooved, so as toreceive the extension O, the Whole constructed so as to operate substantially as set forth.
