Letters Patent No. 93,957, lated August 24, 1869; (mieduted August 7 1869.
mPRovEMNT IN Amm.
-row# The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent making part of the saine.
To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, PETER H.- BRADLEY, of Portland, county of Cumberland, and State of Maine, have invented and discovered a new and useful Adze; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, avoiding unnecessary prolixity, which will enable others to make and use my invention. Y
In the drawings, which make apart of my specification, the following views are shown:
(l.) Figure l is a side view of the adze and socket.
(2.) vFigure 2 is a face view of -the socket, with the spring-slide therein.
(3.) Figure 3 is a side view of the manner of uniting the alize-blade and the socket.
(4.) Figlue 4 is a face and edge view of spring-slide.
Same letters are so used as to indicate like parts in forms are needed, and, in fact, used by the mechanic,
for instance, the ship-builder.r Now, these all have to he used on different handles. So,jin fact, the rnechanic needs as many separate adzes as 11e requires forms ofblades.
1 will refer to the drawings to illustrate the above.
A is intended to represent the socket or head, and into this the handle of the tool is inserted.
B will show the blade.
These two parts (A and B) are separate, or capable o f being separated, as is designed .to beY portrayed in fi g. 3.
C is to show an indentation in the socket A, and when the two parts Aand B'are pressed together, the jutting flange or lip D will'be thrust into the indentation C.
I then passthrough both the socket and 'blade-part, at E, the plug F.
Now, the two parts are firmly united, and the plug F is not liable to be thrown out, by reason of the slit G in the end, so as to form a spring. Y
New, it will be understood, that all the needed forms of blades can heI made with the iiange D, and thus all be attaehable to one aud the same socket A, and thus to theadze-handle set in said socket.- Thus, consid-- erable economy is eected for the user of this tool.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by -Letters Patent, is
An adze, composed of the head orsocket A, flange '1), slot C, and key,F, constructed toopelate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
PETER H. BRADLEY.
Vitnesses:
