Letters Patent No. 93,949, aazedaugmmg 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCYTHES.
The Schedule referred to-in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. BARTLn'rn of-Win chester, in the county of Litchfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scythes; and I do hereby declare that the follow- 1 ing is a full and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of scythes; and consists, mainly, in constructing the blade and heel in separate portions, and connecting the same, by wedging or otherwise; also, in constructing the blade from asolid plate of metal, of uniform thickness, as will hereinafter more fully apear. In the drawings- Figure l is a side elevation of my invention; Figure 2 is a side elevation of the blade, detached; and
Figures 3, 4, and 6, views of parts detached.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe fully its-construction and operation.
A represents the blade of the scythe, which is constructed from a single plate of metal of uniform thickness, one edge of which is turned at right angles, to form the back. Instead of forging the heel with the blade, it is made separate, and the blade is cut of! at the end which is secured to the snath.
'B represents-the heel, which is provided with the oblong projection 1), Within which is the orifice if.
G is the shank, having the usual projection, c.
D represents .a slightly-tapering wedge, which is constructed to correspond in shape with the orifice W.
The parts are connected by simply placing the end of the scythe in the orifice, and inserting ,the wedge with the smallest end toward the snath. The scythe will thus be firmly held, and by knocking out the wedge, the parts may be again detached. The heel is attached to the snath in the usual manner.
Having thus fully described my invention,
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. 1. The parts described, consisting substantially of the heel B, wedgeD, and blade A, when combined and arranged substantially as described.
.2. The scythe-blade A, constructed as described. This specification signed and witnessed, this 13th day of April, A. D. 1869. v
