Description

dnted tatt WILLIAM C. SHIPHER'D,
OF WILLOUGHBY, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 96,152, dated October 26, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOE-LASTS.
The Schedule referred 'to :in these Letters Patent and making part of the name V To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. SH1PHERD,of lVillonghby, in the county of Lake, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoe- Lasts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved means of attaching and detaching the instepblock ofthe last with the main part thereof.
The invention consists of a graduated adjustable circular notched catch-plate, attached to the last, and afspring-catch o n the instep-block of peculiar 'construction, arranged for operation in conjunction with the said catch -plate, all as hereinafter more fully p speciiied.
Figure l represents a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved last, Iand Figure 2 represents a plan view with the instepblock removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a circular notched catch-plate, pivotcd eccentrically in a recess in the. face of the seat ot' the instep-block B, having several notches at various distances from the cent-re, and clamped down against the bottom of the recess, wherein it is itted by the pivotscrew, so as to be held firmly in any position to which it may be adjusted. In front of the said clampingplate is a groove, C, for the point of the catch, and
behind it another groove, D, t-o make room for the shank ofthe catch.
E represents the catch, pivoted at F in a recess, G, in the lower face of the instep-block. This catch is provided with a spring, H, connected to the rear end thereofand bearing at its fiont end against the bottom ofthe recess, so as to throw the .hook of the catch downward.
The rear end 0f the catch is provided with a hole, for the connection of a crooked handle or lever, I, for springing the hooked end ot' the catch up, for disengaging it iom the catch-plate, when the block is to he removed.
The lower end ofthe block is provided with a point,
K, in the usual way, for holding it in position, 'by engaging with the wall of the recess ofthe last.
l The notch of the plate A, with which it is designed that hook shall engage, is adjusted to coincide with the recess C, by loosening the pivot-screw and turning the said plate thereon. By these notches of varying distance, the block B may be held more or less snugly against the wall ofthe recess at K.
Having thus described my invention,
Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 0 The combination of an instep-plate, B, formed with a hollow recess, G, extending through to the out-er end, with the eccentric-notched plate A and springcatch E, arranged as shown and described.
, Witnesses: NVN. C. SHIPHERD.
