DETAQHABLE KNIFE-BLADE.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patente-d Nov. 9, 1999.
`Application filed .Tune 22, 1908. Serial No. 439,851.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARK H. STERLING,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Bisbee, in the county of Cochise and Territory of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Knife-Blades; and .I do Vdeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others, skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to knives having detachable blades.
The object of the invention'is to provide a case or kitchen knife with a detachable blade which is simple in construction and efficient in operation whereby blades of dif ferent pattern and size may be used with a single handle.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim. f
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation, partly in section7 of a knife constructed in accordance with this invention; F ig. 2 represents a side elevation of a portion of a knife showing the outer or wooden handle removed, and with parts broken out; Fig. 43 shows a side elevation partly in section of a portion of a knife constructed in accordance with this invention and embodying a modification; Fig. 4 shows an edge view of a knife handle with a portion of the blade connected thereto showing a modified form of the invention; Fig. 5 shows a perspective view of the connecting device for the blade and handle shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a top plan or edge view of another modification showing the outer handle removed; Fig. 7 shows a side elevation of a portion of a blade with the stem constructed in accordance with the form shown in Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a transverse section through the knife handle; Fig. 9 is a per spective view of the inner member of the handle detached.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the blade 1 is constructed with a fiat stem 2. The handle there shown consists of a metal tube 4, preferably of brass which is* preferably composed of wood or any other suitable material. A steel .ring 6, is mounted on the split end of the tube 4, and is forced down against the outwardly curved or upturned edges of said tube by a shoulder 7, on the inner face of the outer handle 5, said handle when placed in position forces said ring to tightly clamp the shank or stem 3, within the tube 4. A. milled knob 7 is detachably mounted on the outer end of the tube 4 and is designed to hold the outer handle 5, securely in position, as shown in Fig. 1. This handle 5, is preferably provided with the usual ferrule 8, formed at its junction with the blade. The shank or stem 2 Yof the blade 1 preferably tapers t oward its outer end, and when it is desired to remove the blade, the milled kno-b 7 is turned toward the left which unscrews the tube from the shank 2 and permits the blades to be removed.
The form shown in Fig. 3 is similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 except the knob 9 at the end of the brass tube 10 is made integral therewith and the inner end of the tube 10 is screw threaded to engage a screw threaded shank 11 of the blade 12.
In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the handle is constructed similarly to that shown in Fig. 3 with the brass tube 13 there shown screw threaded at its inner end to receive a shank or connecting member 1'4 which is detachably connected with the shank 15 of the blade 16. This connecting member 14 is preferably split longitudinally to receive the shank 15 of the blade and is provided with longitudinally spaced pins as 17, which pass through spaced apertures in the blade shank and when the split portions of this member 14 are forced together and inserted into the tube 13 firmly clamp said blade between them.
In the forms shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the handle is composed of a metal tube 18, with a knob 19 at its outer end and with its inner end screw threaded internally to receive the screw threaded end of a connecting shank or member 2O which is riveted at its unthreaded end to the blade 21, as shown.
It will be understood that the outer handle is used in connection with all of the forms above described and may be made of any desired or suitable material and provided with the usual ferrule at its inner end. This handle may be used in connection with a variety of blades of dierent sizes and shapes, it only being necessary that the stem edges of said end bent outwardly to form :L or connecting member shall be uniformly in all of them.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying` drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Vithout requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacriiicing` any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
l claim as my invention:
ln a knife the combination With, a blade having a shank or tang` at, one end thereof, a handle comprising` an inner tubular member split longitudinally at one end With the stop, a ring slidable on said split end, a tubular outer member removably lit-ting over said inner member and ha ving a, shoulder' at its inner end arranged to engage said clampingl ring to force and hold it in operative position against said stop termed by the bent ends o1' the tubular inner member, and a cap iitting over the outer end of said outer tubular member and detachably engaged with the outer end ot said inner tubular member.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto sct my hand in presence oit' two subscribing witnesses.
MARK HOlVARD S'lERLlNG.
