Description

N. L. RANUM. BAG FASTENER. APPLICATION FILED HAY 24, 1909.
NETIIE L. RANUM, OF DEVILS LAKE, NORTH DAKOTA.
BAG-FnsTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1909.
Application filed May 24, 1909. Serial No. 498,048.
To all whom 'tt may concern:
Be it known that I, NETTIE L. RANUM, a'
citizen of the United States, residing at Devils Lake, county of Ramsey, and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bag fasteners.
The present invention relates to that class of devices `which is adapted to grip or embrace the mouth of a bag or sack to securely seal the same so that the contents, such as grain or the like, cannot escape and the bag can be readily transported and hasfor its object the provision o-f a novel device of this character which may be very inexpensively manufactured from wire, will have strength and lightness, can be rapidly and easily applied to or removed from the bag, and will possess novel means whereby it may be pinned to the bag so that it cannot become detached. i
The invention is set forth fully hereinafter and the novel features are recited in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a view of the upper end or mouth of a bag, showing my fastener applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a perspective detail of the invention with the parts opened.
The upper end of an ordinary grain o-r other bag or sack is shown at 1, Fig. 1 illustrating the manner in whichv the two main parts 2 and 3 of the fastener embrace the mouth part of the bag.
The part 2 consists of a suiiiciently rigid clamp member having at one end a hook 4 and at its other end a hinge-eye 5. I prefer to form this member from a single piece of sutliciently stout wire which is twisted to give the parts strength, one end of the wire forming the hook 4 and the intermediate part being bent to form the hinge-eye 5.
. The said device could, however, be formed from a piece of metal.
rlhe part 3 consists of a suitably rigid member provided with a hinge-eye 6 engaged with the eye 5 and a loop 7 adapted to engage the hook 4 and suitably extended to serve as a ngerhold and as an attachment, whereby an identifying tag may be applied, a resilient pin 8 adapted to be passed through a portion of the bag, as shown in Fig. l, and a keeper 9 for the pin 8. The part 3 and its adjuncts are preferably formed from a single piece of suitably stout wire, but it could be otherwise constructed.
In using the fastener, the vfolds of the mouth of the bag are brought together, as shown in Fig. l, and the previously opened or spread parts 2 and 3 are then made to embrace the bag, the hook 4 being engaged with the eye 7, but at the outset the pin 8 is passed through a part of the bag so that the fastener is securely positioned and cannot become accidentally detached.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: f
In a bag fastener, the combination of two members each constructed of wire and bent into loops which are linked together, whereby said members are hinged, one of said members being formed of twisted strands of wire and terminating in a fastening device, and the other of said members being bent at its free part into a fastening device adapted to engage the fastening device aforesaid, and a guard, said second member being provided with an integral pin adapted to be engaged with said guard.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NETTIE L. RANUM.
Witnesses J. F.. HENRY, ERWIN THOMPSON.
