BRADBORn BAG PASTENER.
Patented May 8, V1883.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. BRADFORD, OF BELFAST, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ALBERT C. BURGESS, OF SAME PLACE.
BAG-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,210, dated May 8, 1883..Y
Application tiled December 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern Beit known that I, CHARLES W. BRADFoRD,
of Belfast, in the county ot' Waldo and State ot' Maine, have invented a new and Improved closed.
The invention consists in a chain having a cross-bar attached to one end and a slitted curved plate to the other end, which chain is provided with a hook for holding it to the bag before and during use. The chain is passed around the gathered part of the bag and drawn np tight, and the link is passed into a slit of the curved plate, whereby the lchain will be held in place and will hold the bag closed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specitication, in which similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure l is a perspective view ot' my im proved bag-fastener, showing the manner in which it is applied. Fig. 2 is a view of the same, showing it detached. 'Fig 3 is a perspective view of the plate for holding the end of the chain.
A cross-bar, A, is attached to one end of a chain, B, and a curved plate, O,is attached to the other end, which plate C has its lower or free end curved upward, as shown. The upper end of the plate O is provided with one or two curved slits or recesses, D, the tongues E, formed by the said slits, being bent outward from the surface of the plate. A hook, F, is attached to a link, G, attached to the chain one or two links from the end of the chain, which is attached to the plate C. The links formingthe chain are to have the eyes or end loops formed in such a manner that they will be in planes at right angles to each other.
The fastener is applied in the following manner: It is attached to the bag H by means of the hook F, which is passed through the hem of the bag, and then remains attached tov the `bag in this manner, whether the bag is empty or full. After the bag has been filled the mouth is gathered up with one hand, and with the other the chain B is passed around the gathered part of the bag. The cross-bar Ais passed between two lingers, and one finger ot' the other hand causes the coincident link of the chain to enter the slit in the upper edge of the plate G after the chain has been drawn tightly, whereby the bag will be securely fastened. The slit prevents the chain from slipping as the eye or loop of the link in the slit catches on the plate. The fastener cannot be loosened or detached without taking hold of the chain and the plate C and pulling them in opposite directions, which is not likelyl to happen accidentally.
The fastener is preferably provided with two slits, so it will always come right side up.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a bag-fastener, the combination, with the chain B, of the cross-bar A, the curved plate C, having slits D, the link G, and the hook F, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES W. BRADFORD.
