To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES R. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Dearborn and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates in general-to improvements in folding beds, and more particularly to a novel frame or support to which any of the ordinary forms of beds commonly found upon the market and provided with a folding head board and foot board, may be applied, and which serves as a fulcrum about which the bed may be swung, and is designed to receive drapery for concealing the bed when it is swung into an upright position.

The invention further contemplates a frame of this character which is simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be readily set up in position, and which will effectively conceal the bed when the bed is swung into an upright position.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a folding bed support constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the bed being shown in an elevated position in full lines and in a lowered position in dotted lines, portions being removed; and, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through one end of the device.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention the numeral 1 designates the base which is located at the head of the bed and may be either solid or given a hollow formation so as to be utilized for the storage of the sheets, pillow cases, or other bedding. Each end of the base is provided with a pair of sockets 2 which are arranged in a transverse row. Projecting upwardly from each end of the base is an upright rod 3, the lower extremities of the rods being received within the rear sockets 2 while the upper extremities of the rods engage a horizontal frame which serves to support the drapery used for concealing the bed when in an uprightposition. This horizontal frame comprises a rear cross bar 4 and a forwardly projecting U-member 5 the ends of which are secured to the cross bar. A short standard 6 projects upwardly from the base 1 in front of each of the upright rods 3, the lower ends of the standards being fitted within the forward sockets 2 while the upper ends of the standards are connected to the corresponding upright rods by the braces 7. The upper ends of the standards are also connected by a fulcrum rod 8 upon which a pair of clamps 9 are pivotally mounted. These clamps are designed to en gage the side boards of a bed 10 which may be of any suitable construction. The swinging endor foot of the bed may be provided with folding legs 11 of any suitable construction, the said legs being swung outwardly into an operative position when the bed is lowered, and folded inwardly against the bed when the bed is swung into an upright position. The mattress may be strapped or otherwise secured to the springs in any suitable manner, and if found desirable the bed clothes may also be clamped at the foot of the bed. The curved bar or U-shaped member 5 of the horizontal frame at the upper end of the rods 3, is designed to receive a curtain 12 or other drapery, and this curtain serves to conceal the bed and to give the appearance of a draped window or door when the bed is swung into an upright position.

The invention also contemplates means for locking the bed in an upright position, and for this purpose a pair of slides 13 are utilized, the said slides being mounted upon the guides 14. secured to the top of the base 1. After the bed has been swung into an upright position, these slides are moved into engagement with the lower ends of the side pieces of the bed and serve to lock the bed against being swung into a horizontal position until the slides have been moved back into an inoperative position.

It will thus be obvious that I have provided a support which may be employed in connection with any of the common forms of beds found upon the market and provided with a folding head board and foot board, the said support enabling the bed to be readily mounted so as to be swung upwardly into an upright position and concealed by drapery.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: i

1. The combination of a base, uprights projecting from the base, a frame carried by the uprights and adapted to receive drapery, standards projecting, from the base and connected to the uprights, a fulcrum rod connecting the standards, clamps pivoted upon the fulcrum rod, and a bed de tachably engaged by the clamps and adapted to be swung into an upright position so as to be concealed by the drapery upon the before mentioned frame.

2. The combination of a base provided with sockets, upright rods projecting upwardly from the base and having their lower ends fitted within a portion of the sockets, a

horizontal frame carried by the upright rods and adapted to receive drapery, standards projecting upwardly from the base and having their lower ends received within the remaining portion of the sockets, connecting means between the standards and the uprights, a fulcrum rod connecting the standards, clamps pivotally mounted upon the fulcrum rod, a bed detachably engaged by the clamps and adapted to be swung into an up: right position so as to be concealed by the drapery upon the before mentioned frame, and slides upon the base for engaging the bed to lock it in an upright position. 3. In a device as specified the combination of a base, uprights projected from said base, a horizontal frame carried by said uprights, a drapery hung upon said horizontal frame to conceal the same and said base, standards projected in parallel forwardly of said uprights, a fulcrum rod carried by said standards, clamps disposed on said fulcrum rod in spaced relation, a bed detachably engaged upon said clamps and slides longitudinally mounted on said base for engagement with the lower end of said bed when the same is folded in a forward position to lock the same in such position.
