J. M. GARDNER.
DRAW BED. APPLIOATIOH FILED JUNE 27, 19I l1 Patented May 7, 19 1 2.
M w a m7 UNITED STATES JOSEPH MERIT GARDNER, 013 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
DRAW-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 191
Application filed June 27, 1911. Serial No. 635,680.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn Mann Gannnnn, a citizen-of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Draw-Bed, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bed which is adapted to be pushed into a housing or recess, or generally into a location in which it will be out of the way and which can be drawn into position for use whenever required.
The main object of the invention is to provide a bed which can be folded up into com pact shape so as to take up minimum floor space and which issupported and guided in such manner that when it is folded up it can, by a single movement or operatiombe shoved into the inclosnre or housing or withdrawn therefrom.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.
The accompanying drawingsillustrate the invention, and referring thereto: Figure l is a perspective of the bed, showing a portion of the housing. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the bed, showing the position of the bed in the housing, the view being taken from the rear or head end of the bed and a portion of the housing being broken away. Fig. 3 is a section on line 00 00 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective of a toggle joint for holding the head and foot frame inextended position. Fig. 5 is a section on line in Fig. 2.
The bed frame, indicated at 1, is provided with guide means consisting of a bar hav ing a leg 3 with a caster 4 at the lower end and running on the floor or other support indicated at 5, said bar being mounted to slide or run on a fixed frame or support to bring the bed ,into or out of normal position. For this purpose said bar 2 may have a cross bar or cross head (3 formed with horizontal flanges 7 and vertical flanges 8 at each end thereof and engaging respectively over the top, and alongside of two guide ails 9 sup ported on standards 1.0, secured to the floor 5, for example. To diminish friction, rollers l l and 12 may be provided on the cross head 6 for engaging respectively with the top and side of said rails. A housing indicated at 14: may be provided, extending over the said guide rails, said housing being of sufficient size to receive and inclose the bed when the bed is folded up as hereinafter setforth.
frame 17 hinged to the frame 1 at 18, said head frame being extended or raised when nccessary,by means of a toggle consisting of links 19 and 20, pivoted together at. 21 and pivoted respectively to the head and to the frame 1. One of said links may be provided with a notch adapted to engage a pin 24 on the other link when the head frame is raised. holding said frame in raised position. The foot frame 26 for the'bed is similarly pivoted or hinged to the bed frame at 27 and connected thereto by toggle links 28 and 29, similar in construction to the toggle 19, 9.0, aforesaid. The supporting and guiding bar 9 may be arranged near the head of the bed so thatv the leg 3 thereof and the supporting rails 9 with their standards 10 serve to support the head end of the bed. The foot end of the bed "may be supported by legs 30 hinged to the foot posts 31 of the bed at 32. Means may be provided for holding the head and foot frames in folded position, said means consisting, for example, of catches 33 pivoted to the frame 1, and having notches 34: adapted to engage respectively over pins 35 on said head and foot frames.
In order to adapt the bed frame for receiving the springs and mattress, said frame may be-made of upper and lower rails 37 and 38 connected together by cross or vertical bars 39. the bar 2 and a bar 40 indicated supporting the springs 41 and mattress 42.
A catch 4-4: may be pivoted on leg 3 having a hook 44 for engaging the head rail 45 of the bed when the bed is raised as shown in Fig. 3, to lock the bed in raised position, said catch being provided with a pedal $6 to enable it. to be released by pressure of the foot. The housing for the bed may be attached to the floor, being. for example, secured to the standards 10 aforesaid, and may be in closed within the wall of. the building, so as to be concealed or'may be built out into a room, or it may be movable, being set in any position in which it is temporarily required, or if desired, the housing may be omitted,
supporting rails. Housing 14; may have a ventilating opening -18 in its top.
position, when the bed is not in use, it will stand within the housing, or upon the rails in position shown in Figs. 2and 3, the head and foot members 17 and 26 being folded The bed may be provided with-a head in dotted lines in Fig. 1 being provided for the bedbeing simply moved into or onto the.
The operation is as follows: In normal LOO upon the body of the bed and retained by catches 33 and the legs 30 also being folded. toward the body of the bed as shown in Fig.
-3. When it is desired to use the bed, it is pulled out from the housing, the guide member 6 sliding on the rails 9, and the caster 4 running on the floor or support therefor, until the bed .is completely drawn from the housing or to theposition at which it is desired to be used. The legs 30 being then extended, catch 44 is released and the bed is drawn down, the frame 1 thereof swinging on the bar 2 tothe position shown inFig. 1, and the foot and head members 17 and 26 are then raised or extended as shown in said figure, and locked by the toggle means 19,. 20, 28 and 29. The mattress 42 and springs 41 being already in position in the bed frame, the bed is then in condition for use, the bed coverings being also normally in position if desired, or being put on after the bed is lowered, as may be preferred'. The pivotal connection of the bed with the supporting and guiding bar 2 is intermediate between the ends of the bed so that the bed is partially balanced above such pivotal. support, thereby facilitating the raising and lowering of the bed in swinging on such support.
What I claim is 1. A bed comprising a frame, a fixed support, a guide member mounted on said fixed support to slide horizontally thereon, said bed frame being'pivotally mounted on said guide member to swing thereon on a horizontal axis rrom a horizontal to a vertical position and to be drawn-with said guide member in its horizontal sliding movement on the fixed support.
2. A bed comprising a frame, a fixed support, a guide member mounted on said fixed support to slide-horizontally thereon, said bed frame being pivotally mounted on said guide member to swing thereon on a horizontal axis from a horizontal to a vertical osition and to be drawn with said guide member in its horizontal sliding movement on the fixed support, the pivotal supports-1 l bed.
3. A bed comprising a frame, a fixed support, a member slidably mounted on said fixed support. said frame being swingingly mounted on said slid-able member "to be drawn therewith and to swing thereon into and out of position for use, said bed frame being provided with legs pivotally connected thereto, andsaid guide member having a leg provided with a roller at its lower end for the purpose set forth.
4. A bed comprising a. frame, a fixed sup port, a guide member mounted on said fixed support to slide horizontally thereon. said bed frame being pivotally mounted on said guide member to swing thereon on a horizontal axis from a horizontal to a vertical position and to be drawn with said guide mem her in its horizontal sliding movement on the fixed support, the pivotal supports for the bed frame on said guide member being intermediate between the ends of the bed, a legon said guide member for supporting one end of the same, and a foot lever pivoted to said leg and provided with a. catch adapted to engage the adjacent end of .the bed when the bed is raised to vertical position.
5. A bed comprising a frame, a fixed sup port, a member slidably mounted on said fixed support, said bed frame being swingingly mounted on said slidable member to be drawn therewith and to swing thereon into and out of position for use, and a housing secured to said fixed support and extending into position to receive the bed when it is moved away from the position for use.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angcles, California this 20th day of June, 1911.
JOSEPH MERIT GARDNER.
