Description
WILLIAM D. CHAPIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BLADE-SHARPENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1909.
Application filed August 24, 1908. Serial No. 449,905.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM D. CHAPIN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blade- Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for sharpening knife blades, shear blades and similar articles, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be easily connected with a table or other support, and by means of which blades of various kinds and classes may be quickly and conveniently sharpened.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are desig nated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved blade sharpening device, Fig. 2 a plan view thereof, Fig. 3 a front view thereof, and ;Fig. et a side view showing a modification and the method of securing the same to a table or other support.
In the practice of my invention as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, I provide an attachment comprising a yoke-shaped bracket a through one jaw of which is passed a thumb screw 5 by means of which the attachment may be secured to a table or other support. The front or closed side of the bracket or attachment is provided at the top with a cross head 0 in the back face of which and adjacent to the opposite sides thereof are formed vertically arranged recesses c which are triangular in form in cross section and in which are placed triangular file or cutting bars (Z which are held in place by a plate 6 by means of a thumb screw f passed through the head 0 and through said plate. The cross head 0 is also provided between the bars (Z with forwardly and backwardly ranging recesses 9, three of which are shown, and in Fig. 3 I have shown the method of holding the blade of a knife or similar article in the operation of sharpening the same. In this operation the blade h is placed so that the back edge thereof will rest in one of the recesses g, and the edge of the blade is held against one of the edges of one of the bars d and the blade is moved back and forth until a proper edge is formed thereon. The blade 72. may be held at any desired angle to one of the bars (Z and the bevel of the edge of the blade will depend on the position of said blade, and in Fig. 3 I have indicated in dotted lines various positions in which the blade may be held so as to give the desired bevel to the edge thereof.
In Fig. 4; I have shown a modification in which the securing bracket or attachment a instead of being provided with parallel jaws o as shown in Fig. 1 is L-shaped in form or provided with a base a through which is passed a screw 64 by which the attachment may be secured to a table or other support, and with this exception the device as shown in Fig. 4 is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive.
The bars (l are triangular in cross section and all the edges thereof are cutting or file edges, and the position of said bars may be changed whenever desired so that either edge thereof may be directed inwardly, and said bars are also vertically adjustable.
My improved blade sharpening device is simple in construction and operation, and may be employed for sharpening blades of any kind or class, and changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A blade sharpening device comprising a support provided with a cross head in which is placed a vertically arranged cutting or file bar, said cross head being also provided in the top thereof with spaced transverse notches or recesses adapted to receive the back edge of a blade.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 22nd day of August, 1908.
