EDWARD KBUEGER, OF KIMBERLY, WISCONSIN.
DEVICE FOR REMOVING IPU'ITY FROM WINDOW-PAWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. at, 1917..
Application filed October 14, 1916. Serial No. 125,740.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDW'ARD H. Knunenn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kimberly, in the county of Outagamie and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Removing Putty from Window-Panes, of which the following is a specification.
An object of this invention is to provide a device for removing putty from window panes, and consists more particularly of a device of simple Construction adapted for removing hard putty from the edges of window panes so as to clean the edges of the panes in order that a new putty or other substance can be readily placed thereon.
The invention embodies, among other features, a revoluble cutting member carried on a suitable handle and also having arranged thereon an adjustable roller whereby, when the device is applied to a window pane, the roller will operate over the pane adjacent the edge'having the putty thereon to guide the cutter along the edge of the window pane so that the putty contained on the edge of the pane will be removed therefrom.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, looking longitudinally through the device; and
Fig. 23 is a side elevation, showing the means for imparting rotation to the roller.
Referring more particularly" to the views, I provide a frame 10, substantially L- shaped, and adapted for rigid connection with a shank 11 including a handle 12, a suitable pin 13 being arranged to extend from the frame 10 and passing into an aperture 1 1 in the shank and a screw 15 is arranged to pass transversely through a portion of the frame 10 and extend into an enlarged head 16 formed with the shank 11, to rigidly secure the frame 10 to the shank.
As mentioned heretofore, the frame 10 is substantially L-shaped, thus providing a plurality of arms 17, 18, the free end of the arm 17 constituting a suitable bearing 19 in which is journaled a shaft 20 having keyed to one end thereof a revoluble circular cutter 21, the other end of the shaft having keyed thereto or formed therewith a suitable toothed wheel 22which is connected by means of a chain 23 to a larger toothed wheel 24L mounted to rotate on the shank 11 and including an operating handle 25.
bar 26 is arranged to slide in the free end of the other arm 18 and is arranged to be adjustably secured therein by a suit able thumb screw 27 having threaded connection with the arm 18, and when screwed up thereon, adapted to engage the bar 26 to secure the same rigidly on the arm. The free end of the bar 26 is curved, and journaled thereon is a suitable roller 28, the said roller being of substantially the same diameter as the cutter 21 and adapted to lie adjacent thereto.
In the use of the device described, the article is grasped by the handle 12 in one hand and the other hand is positioned to grasp the handle 25 of the wheel 24. The device is now placed upon a window pane so that the cutter 21 will lie upon the edge of the window pane having hard putty thereon which t is deslred to remove, with the roller 28 adapted to lie on the pane adjacent the edge having the putty thereon. Now by pressing forwardly on the handle 12 the device will be advanced along the edge of the window pane, and by imparting rotation to the wheel 24: it will be seen that the toothed wheel 22, connected with the wheel 24 by the chain 23, will be rotated, thus imparting rotation to the cutter 21 and which, engaging the hardened putty on the edge of the window pane, will cut and remove the same therefrom. It will be readily seen that by providing the roller 28 the device will be guided along the edge of the pane so as to retain the cutter in cutting position and further limits the cutting depth of said roller 28. It will be apparent that the device can be used in connection with window panes of various sizes and shapes, inasmuch as the roller 28 can be adjusted with respect to the cutter 21 to lie adjacent to the cutter, in advance or in the rear and to one side of the same.
From the foregoing description it will therefore be seen that a simple and durable article is provided, consisting of few parts arranged to produce the desired result and which cannot readily get out of working order.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with an L-shaped frame, of a shank, an enlarged head at one end ofthe shank and having the frame rigidly secured thereto, a handle at the other end of the shank, a shaft-jjomnaied on one of the arms;
the said shank andprovided With a handle,
a chain connecting the said toothed wheels to impart rotation to the cutter when the second toothed Wheel is rotated, a bar ad-' justablymounted on the other arm of the frame, and a. roller journaled on the said bar and achustable therewlth.
2. Ina device of the elass descrihed, the
combination with an L-shaped frame, of a shank having the frame secured thereto, a handle carrled the shank, a bar s11dab]y secured to one of the arms of the frame, a
jeutter journaled on iQhHfOthGI arm of said frame, an operating Wheel mounted to rotate on ,the shank and having connectionv with said eutterto impart rotation thereto, and a roller'mountedon the slidable bar and in juXta-position to said eutter.
In testimony WhereofI 'aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses}.
