UNITED STATES PATENT. Fries- EDW'ARD L. GAYLORD, OF BRIDGEIORT, CONNECTICUT.
PlCTURE-MAT-CU TTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,422, dated October 9, 1883.
Application filed August 4, 1853. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. GAYLORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mat Cutting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in devices for cutting pictureniat-s and the like, and has for its object to provide a device of this description in which the mat or other material shall be firmly held. underneath the cutter, while at the same time the cutter-frame and knife shall be adjustable; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements, hereinafter fully and in detail explained, and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may more fully understand its construction and operation, I will proceed to describe the same in, detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan view; Fig. 2, a cross-section taken through the cutter-frame, and'llig. 3 a side elevation.
Similar letters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
A is the frame, and B a guideway arranged thereon, and connected at each extremity to fiat spring pieces C by means of bolts D, passed through said guideway and springs. These bolts are riveted to the guideway and extended down through the block E, and are provided with nuts I! at .their extremities. Between the former of which is stationary, and the latter adapted to turn freely around the bolt D. The contiguous surfaces of these disks are beveled or inclined, as shown, so that it will be readily understood that by the manipulation of the movable disks H the guideway B is clamped down or loosened, as the case may be, for the purpose presently explained.
I is the plate, arranged to travel 011 the guideway 13. Adjustably attached to said plate by means of set-screw J isthc cutter-box carrier K. At the forward end of this carrier is pivoted the box L.
M is a set-screw, by means of which the box may be secured at any desired angle. \Vithin this box is the tool-holder N, so arranged as to slide freely within said box.
0 is the cutting-tool, which is held in the desired position within the holder by means of the set-screw P and block Q.
In assembling the several parts of my improvement I place the tool within the holder, slide the block thereon, and, after adjusting the tool so as to cut to the desired depth, secure the parts by means of the set-screw P,
which operates through a frame, R, traveling in'ways at the sides of the tool-holder.
' The operation of my improvement is as follows: The mat is placed upon the frame and underneath the guideway, and clamped in position by operating the disks H. The plate K is adjusted out or in so as to bring the cuttingtool in the proper position above the mat, and the boXL is secured in the desired position so as to cut at the required angle. By exerting a downward pressure on the tool-holder, and
sliding the plate I along the guideway B, the
cutting-tool is forced through the mat and a cut made. The mat may be removed by simply turning the disks H back to their normal position, when the action of the springs C will throw the guideway up and off from the mat. I
I do not wish to confine myself to the exact manner shown and described of adjusting the several parts, as this may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr 1. In a device for cutting mats for pictures and the like, the plate adapted 1o slide on the guideway, as described, and having secured thereto the devices for supporting and holding the cutting-tool holder and cutting-tool, substantially as set forth.
2; The plate I, adapted to slide along the guideway B, in combination with the cutterbox. carrier adjustably attached to said plate,
swinging box L,too1-ho1der N, and adjustable In testimony whereof I affix my signature in cutting-tool 0 substantially as set forth and presence of two Witnesses.
