Be it known that I, FLOYD G. SMITH, of Buckhannon, in the county of Upshur and State of Vest Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tool-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is aniniprovement in machines intended especially for use in cutting or dressing the toothed chisels used by marble and stone cutters; and the invention seeks, among other improvements, to provide, in connection with a punch and suitable devices for operating the same, a die which is made in sections and is adjustable, so that it can be set to suit any suitable size of punch and be used in the dressing and making of all ordinary toothed chisels, from the most delicate carving-tool to the largest size of such chisels.
The invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed. 7
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine as in use. Fig. 2 is a partial plan view of the machine, partly in section. Fig. 3 shows the punch in detail, and Fig. 4 is a detail front view of the die.
In the construction shown the frame has a suitable standard A, is provided with a plunger B, and levers O and D and link D, by which to operate the said plunger, and the latter is adapted to support the punch E, so that the punch can be removed to permit the use of punches of diiferent sizes, as may be desired. The punch is preferably formed, as shown, with its lower edge e curved upward from its rear to its front edge, and is grooved at e, forming the cutting-edges at e at the opposite sides of the said lower edge and extending from the front to the rear side, such cutting-edges diverging from front to rear, as shown.
The die F is formed in sections F F, and is adjustable to adapt the machine to cut larger or smaller teeth and teeth of different angles, as will be understood.
I11 the construction shown each die-section F is provided at the meeting sides thereof with what may be termed a fulcrum-point at f, and also with a bolt-slot f, which is preferably curved on an are approximately centering at f. The cutting-edges G G of the sections F are arranged in rear of the fulcrum f and incline outward therefrom, the angle of divergence of the edges G of the sections F being varied by adjusting the sections F on the fulcrum f, as may be desired. The dies below the edges G G incline outward, as shown.
It will be understood that in operation clifferent punches are used to form the different angles of teeth, the angle of the punch being fixed or invariable. The die, however, may be adjusted by rocking its sections upon fulcrum f to set its edges G at any suitable angle desired, and may then be secured in such position by tightening up the die-securing screws H, the die being thus capable of adjustment to fit any-sized punch and adapted for use in making any-sized tooth, from the most delicate carving-tool to the largest-sized cutting-tool. The sections F can also be easily sharpened when dulled by use.
The punch, being grooved and curved at its cutting end, as described, works after the plan or fashion of a pair of shears, the edges e of the punch acting against the edges G of the die and operating to cut a clean smooth tooth that needs little or no after dressing or filing.
In preparing the chisel for the described machine it is preferred to first heat it red-hot, and then let it cool to a black heat, when it is ready for the machine.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new is 1. In a machine substantially as described, a die formed of sections F F, each having at one edge a cutting-edge G and a fulcrumpoint f, and provided with a slot for the clam ping-screw, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In amachine substantially as described, the combination of the framing, a die formed in two sections, each having at one edge a cutting-edge G and a fulcrum-point f, and clamp devices by which to secure such sections in their various adjustments, substantially as set forth.
3. The improved machine herein described,

the clamp devices for securing such sections to the framing, the punch provided at the opposite sides of its lower end with cutting-edges, and the devices for supporting and operating the punch, all substantially as and for the 15 purposes set forth.
